Chui Yim returned to the Cloud Palace outer sect the next day with Kam Chin-Kee. Even though they noticed Lam Mei Mei’s absence, neither of them paid much attention.
As serious as ever, Woo Nim stared at her students. “After a month of class, it’s time for your field work.”
“Field work?” Some of the students pondered at Woo Nim’s choice of words while others like Kam Chin Kee and Chui Yim looked confused.
As Woo Nim, she cared not whether the students already knew about this and continued her explanation. “The Cloud Palace outer sect focuses on practicality, and everything we teach is usable on the battlefield. As I mentioned on the first day of school, you must place first in everything as our students, but that’s impossible with your current standards. Packyour bags tonight, you will be leaving for the Forbidden Forest tomorrow with me and Mr Cheuk.”
What the heck? This came out of nowhere! Chui Yim frowned. On the other hand, it didn’t bother Kam Chin-Kee; it was no more than an intriguing lesson for him.
“I’ll make myself clear; the Forbbiden Forest is a restricted area. You may all know this already, but the Cloud Palace will not be responsible for any injuries or mishaps in the forest,” Woo Nim stated. “Cultivation is the path of going against the heavens and earth. Those who aren’t confident should either opt out now. Otherwise, write a will if you insist on coming along, so your parents may find closure.”
The atmosphere in the classroom turned unpleasant when Woo Nim spoke of death so calmly.
“We’ll start our lesson now.” With that, Woo Nim started her lesson, ignoring her student’s reactions.
Class ended uneventfully as Chui Yim and Kam Chin Kee returned to their residence.
“We need more Thousand Mechanism Arrows; who knows how many gliphic beasts there’ll be?”
“I didn’t know you’re such a coward.” Kam Chin Kee laughed; he looked incredibly handsome when he did.
“Hey, it’s not like we get to reincarnate every day. I don’t want to die again!” Chui Yim replied without the slightest embarrassment.
Kam Chin Kee stopped laughing and flashed Chui Yim a thin smile. “Be at ease, brother Chui; I’ll protect you.”
Chui Yim rolled his eyes. Both Kam Chin-Kee and I are innate wind chamber cultivators who have yet to break through to the single-gliphic rank! Moreover, it was stated in the books that the Forbidden Forest isn’t a place for one-chambered cultivators to train at!
In no time, they reached the residence. Kam Chin Kee couldn’t help but complain when he saw the couplets on the door. “I say, when are you going to change these? They are too old fashioned.”
“Such manly things aren’t meant to be understood by a sissy like you.” Chui Yim huffed, walking into the living room only to see Yeung Chun serving a guest tea. “Brother Yeung, is someone here to visit?”
Yeung Chun turned towards the door with a smile. “Yeah. She said she’s a friend of brother Kam.”
“Brother Chin Kee!” A cheerful voice rang throughout the residence as a teenage girl dashed out happily, a man with his arms wrapped in cloth following her. The teenage girl was no beauty, but her genuine smile was enough to melt people.
It had been about two years since they last met, so they shouldn’t have changed much. However, having lived together for a long time, they could recognise how different each other had gotten with just a glance.
Chui Yim was no longer as short as he used to be, while Lam Ming Sum now had smooth, silky, blue hair that flowed down her shoulders nicely instead of the bird’s nest on her head.
But some things still stayed the same. Chui Yim was still the same bald kid, and Lam Ming Sum had the same fox-like eyes.
People might transform themselves, yet certain traits would survive the passage of time.
Chui Yim flashed Lam Ming Sum a smile while she clasped her mouth shut, tears trickling down her face.
“Big brother Chui!”
“Stop crying!”
“But… I missed you so much, big brother Chui!”
“I said stop crying!”
Kam Chin Kee stared at them weirdly as the memories of the big brother Chui that Lam Ming Sum had always mentioned came to mind. Oh, so that was Chui Yim?
The words Lam Ming Sum once told him rang in his mind.
“Luckily, I have you, brother Chin-Kee, with me. You look like Big brother Chui somehow.”
“You have the same look in your eyes.”
“Both of you have a lonely look in your eyes… you two look lonely, as if nobody in this world can understand you.”
Kam Chin Kee smiled. No wonder she said we looked alike. Maybe destiny is always playing a joke on us, huh?
Very soon, Lam Ming Sum was smiling happily as she ran around Kam Chin-Kee and Chui Yim. She was on cloud nine to learn that her “big brother” and her only best friend were staying together. Like a curious cat, she kept asking how they met, but neither told her the truth as it was too complicated.
Lam Ming Sum then asked Chui Yim about the scary incident that took place at the start of last year, and he chose to tell her the less worrying stories while Kan Hang listened to them silently.
Even though he had left the Shadowforge Hall, he was still the current emperor’s previous shadow and had astute intelligence. He had investigated what happened to Chui Yim in that period and could feel his sincerity.
Ming Sum might worry if he told her everything.
With that, Lam Ming Sum patted her undeveloped chest, a plucky action she had learnt from Chui Yim.
“I’ll cook today!” she exclaimed before dashing into the kitchen after exchanging a smile with the two boys.
