"What's the commotion about?" Xin Yichen walked over to the direction where a few of the old staff members were standing. Their bodies were stiff, and their eyes fixed on the person who had entered the mansion with his own army. He narrowed his eyes against the group, trying to see past the wall created by the human flesh.
"Master!" Startling everyone, Cao Kung, appeared out of nowhere. His breath ragged, appearing as if he had run a mile.
"We have a situation," Cao Kung said, his eyes stealing glancing at the already appealed Zhenyi.
Xin Yichen raised his brows at him doubtingly but refrained from asking.
"Tang Yuzhang is here at your residence, Master."
Xin Yichen's eyes focused on Cao Kung, who still was in bewilderment. He wasn't sure when Zhenyi appeared next to him, or what anyone said after that.
All he could hear was the words that Tang Yuzhang was in his residence. Under his roof. He watched as the commotion disappeared and the face of two men in traditional Chinese robes came before his eyes, but none of them belonged to the man or the tempest called Tang Yuzhang.
Why was he under his roof after more than a decade?
What was left here for him to belong here anymore?
He needed answers. Fast and urgent.
"What happened Bà?" The voice didn't belong to Zhenyi but instead, it was Long Jie who touched his shoulder and brought him out of stupor.
"The ghosts of our past are here to collect the toll, son. I wonder what I would have to pay this time." His answer sent a jolt of tremor in Zhenyi and Long Jie's heart.
Xin Yichen was a straightforward man. He never talked in riddles. However, today he was at a loss for words.
People belonging to the Tang family had a thing for rendering him speechless quite often.
Tang Yuzhang didn't belong here. He must go back to the cave he returned from. There was no place for him in their lives and Tang Yuzhang made sure of it years ago when he asked for his departure from the family. He said it was not permanent, but he didn't return either. For more than a decade. But now he was back. And the question was why?
Also, the most important question was who was he?
"Go back, Zhenyi. Finish your breakfast. I have a matter to complete. I will join you soon." Xin Yichen patted her head gently.
Long Jie started counting up to five in his heart.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Boom.
"Master Yichen, should I call you this?" Zhenyi folded her arms over her chest. Her eyes ablaze, ready to burn anything and anyone who stood like a wall in her way "How long are you going to hide the matter of my mother's family from me? You broke the conduct and I let it slide for the mere fact that you're my family, my father, but no one gets to hide the information from the boss. Not even you. No one at all. Period. "
Explosion. Long Jie was anticipating one. He had seen it in her eyes. Xin Yichen may not have looked down on his daughter but he did something she despised the most -- Hiding matters from her.
It didn't matter if his intentions were pure and for her well-being, he was not allowed to hide such information from her. It was like breaking her trust that was akin to misleading.
"Zhenyi, I didn't lie to you." Xin Yichen didn't feel guilty for hiding it from her. If he was given a choice, he would still choose to do what he did earlier. He was not wrong. This was what Xin Yichen was thinking.
"But an error of omission is also similar to lying, father." She walked over and gave him a wicked smirk.
Long Jie was too well familiar with it. The smirk didn't belong to his wife but to Xin Zhenyi. The boss of the outfit. He was amused but, most of all, he was relieved.
"Where is Tang Yuzhang?" Zhenyi threw a questioning look at Cao Kung.
"In the hall, Miss Xin," came the reply.
"What do you know about the family, Zhenyi?" Xin Yichen asked, worriedly. She didn't remember everything, did she? He hoped that she did not.
As if Zhenyi could decipher what was going on in her father's head, she said, " Enough to know that something is definitely going on."
"Go ahead. I'll be waiting for you inside the bedroom." Long Jie leaned over and whispered in her ear.
She looked at him dumbfounded.
'This man is so shameless!'
"What can I do watching you in your element turns me on?" Long Jie grinned and went back to finish his breakfast. He didn't wish to join them. It was a matter concerning her mother and he didn't want to make things awkward for them. Moreover, he was not very interested, if he wanted to know he could always ask Zhenyi and there was no way she wouldn't tell him, well, except if the matter was overly confidential.
"Shall we leave, Bà?" inquired Zhenyi as she cast a look at her father who was looking rather hesitant, but still nodded.
"Who is Tang Yuzhang, Bà?" asked Zhenyi as they started walking towards the hall where the point man was waiting for them.
A disgruntled growl rumbles through his chest.
'Just how many shocks I have yet to receive, God?' Zhenyi wondered.
Since Xin Yichen knew that there was nothing that could change Zhenyi's mind, he decided to answer her question as much as he could.
However, it still was not the time to reveal everything at once.
"He was adopted by your late grandfather. Your mother's father," said Xin Yichen, warily. " He was an orphan, Reine had saved and taken him as her sworn brother, but Tang Yuzhang never considered your mother as his sworn sister ever."
This truly shocked Zhenyi. Who on earth wouldn't want to be related to people from the Tang family? They kind of held a similar position in the country like the royal family in Britain. The only difference was that Tang family was not given the status of royalty in the Constitution of the country. But, it was verbal.
"A traitor then?" Zhenyi couldn't help but think of other terms to define Tang Yuzhang. It seemed like he had quite a personality and not to mention personality too.
Xin Yichen scoffed. "Traitor? He put his life at risk many times to save your mother's life. He gave Tang Reine his unwavering loyalty. He used to say that he was the most loyal employee of Tang Reine, and so he devoted his life to Tang Reine."
He paused and heaved out a long-suffering sigh. It was overwhelming to talk about him and Tang Reine for Xin Yichen. Tang Reine was a sore point for him. He couldn't talk about them without getting nostalgic and emotional.
He remembered something else and went on, " He had nothing to do with the Tang family even though your late grandfather gave him his family name. Many people associated with the family didn't approve of this as the family name was the most sacred and valuable in the whole of the country, but your grandfather was of the view that it was the least he could do for Tang Yuzhang."
Xin Yichen's voice grew warm and soft all of a sudden, and Zhenyi knew that he's looking back at the time when his wife was still alive. She felt a disturbing pang of what could only be described as grief.
No. It had to be guilt. She had no right to grieve her dead mother when she was the one behind her untimely death.
"If there was a man on this earth, Tang Reins would go to ask for aid, it would be Tang Yuzhang, no one else," said Xin Yichen, enviously.
He was not ashamed to admit that he was envious of Tang Reine's relationship with Tang Yuzhang. But at the same time realization hit him and reminded him that the man he was envious of was the closest thing to a friend.
The anguish he was feeling right now was so crushing that he had to force himself to breathe through it so he didn't slash the person outside into pieces and then ask him why couldn't he save Tang Reine like always, when he, Xin Yichen, failed.
"Not even you Bà?" The question asked by Zhenyi broke his trail of thoughts. Her question was mocking him.
He glanced at her and smiled tirelessly. "Not even me. He paused and then said, " Not even you or Ryuu even if she was alive."
