Long Jie nodded at his father-in-law.

He walked in her direction and sat beside her. Noticing someone beside her, she turned around only to find Long Jie staring at her. She gave him her recent well-practiced smile.

He scooted close to her and pulled her closer to his chest. "You scared me, do you know it?"

Zhenyi blinked at him.

"Of course, you don't," Long Jie muttered under his breath.

These days she had been scaring him a lot. Her behavior, her mood, everything about her was scaring him to the core but he never talked about it loud because he knew if he asked questions, she would distance herself from him like she had been doing lately.

He put his hand in the water and sprinkled the drops of water on her face.

"What are you doing?" She couldn't help but ask as he sprinkled water on her face. She just took a bath this morning and now he was getting her again.

"Washing the sadness away from my wife's beautiful face," came the reply.

"So cheesy!" She said, looking at the water again. She couldn't face him without wanting to run in a different direction without having to face anyone. That way it had been easy. If she didn't see their faces, she wouldn't remember her nightmares. All old and new included.

They said that the thing about running from your past is it always catches up to you.

Something similar to it had been happening to Zhenyi lately. It was better as long as she didn't remember what she had caused? What mayhem she had been responsible for? It was truly alright as long as she didn't remember but now?

They also said that the ghosts of every mistake you had ever made would constantly hunt you till you won't break down and shatter into so many tiny, tiny pieces that you won't be able to recognize yourself. But these ghosts always watch you from the sidelines and seek pleasure from your misery.

Zhenyi was being the prey to the demons of her past, she was letting them inflict torture and misery on herself as she believed she deserved it.

Atonement -- that's what she had been trying to seek by inflicting pain on herself.

But only if it was so easy to have...

"Want to have breakfast here?" Long Jie asked, ignoring the fact that she was lost in her thoughts again.

"Here?" Zhenyi came out of stupid, and turned around to look at him, and asked in surprise.

Long Jie nodded. "You seem to like this place, so why not have breakfast here?"

Zhenyi leaned against his chest, seeking warmth and tenderness. Lord knew how much she needed.

"I'm sorry, Jie." She didn't know if Long Jie heard his whisper or not.

"Breakfast?" Long Jie asked with a smile.

She nodded and he signed in relief. When Zhenyi was not looking towards him, he gave a thumbs up to his father-in-law as if to drop worrying and he had got it.

---

The breakfast was arranged on the table in the middle of the beautiful garden. It was nothing heavy but quite simple and healthy. Long Jie was sitting on the chair next to Zhenyi.

He fed her the last remaining bite on her plate and sighed in relief.

"Try this," said Long Jie as he tried to serve her another healthy dish.

Zhenyi held her hand on the plate and shook her head. "I can't. I'm really full."

He scowled at no one. Zhenyi glanced at him and she could swear that the scowl he had worn on his face looked too beautiful.

"I swear, Love," said Zhenyi mimicking his recent nickname for her.

"Zhenyi," Long Jie groaned.

Zhenyi looked at him, slowly and very innocently blinking at him.

"You aren't eating enough," Long Jie said with a complaint.

"I really am full. Seriously. "

Long Jie sighed. "I still can't win from you."

He shoved another plate in front of her.

"What?" Zhenyi raised her brow.

"Medicines."

"Uhuh…" She swallowed them with great disgust.

A genuine emotion on her face after so long, so what if it's that of disgust.

She stood up and said while looking at him," The patient is off to her room again."

Long Jie ignored the patient's remark and pulled her into his lap. She didn't resist his touch instead she seemed to have been starved of it. He didn't kiss her these days. Of course, he would drop numerous pecks on his face but they didn't count in kisses.

As she settled on his lap, he propped his head on her shoulder and circled his arms around his waist in possession.

He inhaled her unique scent and calmed his senses.

"I miss you, Cat eyes," Long Jie whispered as his lips moved to his neck.

Her heart stretched tight as she heard the raw ache in his voice. She shouldn't feel guilty then why was she? She had been trying to be a good wife to him these days but he would turn down all her advances.

"Why? I have been in front of you all the time. Then, why do you miss me?" Zhenyi's supposed to be neutral voice betrayed her. It was anything but neutral.

"Yes, you're. You are always in front of my eyes. I can't even move my eyes from you yet I can't stop myself from missing you. Why is it so, Cat eyes?" questioned Long Jie as he pressed a kiss on her hair.

Silence. That's how she answered him.

She stood up from his lap and started walking frantically towards her room. Her current sanctuary. Her haven. When she heard him say," But why do I feel like that you missed yourself too. That you don't recognize what you have become. That you don't know what path to chose to walk home. That you want to walk home but something is stopping you. That you miss me too as much as I miss you even though we are still by each other's side."
