The robbers method of shooting a few people to demonstrate their readiness to kill anyone uncooperative was very effective in controlling the crowd.

The guy in the middle pointed his machine gun at the ceiling and squeezed the trigger, riddling the ceiling with holes. Then, he roared, All of you, shut up!
