Chapter 427: Question
Zaos noticed that Cohnal wanted to say a few things regarding what Melisse said. However, he obviously would make too much noise if Zaos gave him the chance to speak.
“Why, Captain?” Melisse asked.
“I am not anyone’s captain anymore,” Zaos said. “Besides, things are a bit complicated right now. If you really want to help then do this, return to your ship and travel back to the Capital. You can send an alert to Drannor after two weeks about me, I can imagine him focusing all his attention and resources on this next war. So, you will have the chance to enter the castle and look for the royal library and confirm the things that I said.”
“That seems like too much work,” Melisse said.
“You don’t need to help me in this next war, you need to help the whole world,” Zaos added. “Prepare your troops accordingly once you learn the truth. You will probably be summoned to the battlefield and if you meet you there with all the books that mention the demon god, I might reconsider my decision here.”
After that, Zaos covered Melissa’s mouth and then gave Cohnal the chance to speak. He already had answered or heard the most important questions, so he couldn’t imagine him asking anything really important. However, Zaos at least needed to give him that opportunity.
“It has been a while, former Captain,” Cohnal said while glaring at him.
“Yep, it has,” Zaos said.
“You should pay a visit to the kingdom to see what happened in the last few years due to your actions, you can’t keep running away forever,” Cohnal said.
“About that… I can imagine,” Zaos said after thinking for a while. “Still, I can’t say that I regret my choices. My actions caused you guys a lot of problems, right? I knew that would happen and I did it anyway. That doesn’t help my case, but it is the unavoidable truth.”
“None of us have been able to live normal lives since then, at home, many people still look at us with scorn despite our accomplishments and in the battlefield, if something happens, no other unity would come to our rescue,” Cohnal said. “Despite that, you still can say that, huh. You are really self centered.”
“I can’t negate that,” Zaos nodded. “Until I deserted, I followed orders for the sake of the kingdom because I didn’t know what I should do in this world, but now I know and I will achieve that goal no matter what. I will understand if neither of you don’t believe in me, but I will need to give you this warning anyway. I will leave while imagining that you guys will return to the castle and confirm things in the library, but even if you don’t that is fine. However, you should leave the country, if I discover that you guys are still here tomorrow night or advanced in the interior of the country, I will capture you. Believe me, I don’t want to, but I will keep you captive for years if I have to.”
Zaos didn’t want to show that sign of weakness. Still, in the end, if they insist on the mission of trying to find Zaos’ location, he will have to deal with them in one or the other, and he couldn’t kill his little sister.
“You will wake up tomorrow at noon, make your decision as soon as possible,” Zaos said before he used Sleep. “Remember, the time limit is until sunset.”
It didn’t take long for them to fall asleep, and then Zaos sighed since that conversation had been pretty tiresome. After freeing everyone from the improvised ropes and then putting them back on their beds, Zaos jumped from the window and then stared at the dark sky of the night. Was he doing the right thing? Was there a better option? Those questions were bothering him quite a bit. Unless he decimates the army that Drannor will send, they won’t be able to live in peace. However, Zaos can’t stay with Milliendra while he fights… he will have to stay away from home for quite a while. Sooner or later, Milliendra will hear rumors about him, and slowly, she will understand what is going on.
“Let’s hope that Aleni thought of a better solution for this problem,” Zaos muttered to himself.
A few hours later, the group in the inn woke up. The sun was already high in the sky, proving that the conversation they had with Zaos hadn’t been a dream. Now they had to decide as a group how they should proceed.
“Staying here and trying to find Zaos position isn’t an option,” Elius said. “He will approach us without letting any of us notice again.”
“We can always leave one on guard duty at night to prevent that,” Cohnal said.
“And then what, fight him? Is already clear that he is dead set in keeping his base hidden,” Elius said. “I hate to admit it, but the kid is too much for us, even if we fight against him and without his magic.”
“I don’t know about you guys, but I am going home and check what Zaos said,” Melisse said. “It is obvious that he is preparing for something big, and there is nothing bigger than the revival of the demon god.”
“That is nonsense, why would the demon god return only now?” Cohnal asked.
“… Due to the recent wars, most kingdoms have been weakened quite a lot,” Nyana said after thinking for a while. “I would say that it is the perfect moment for someone who aims for world domination to appear. Considering how fast the Ashiris kingdom was to start a war against us… I would say that it makes sense that something was controlling the queen of that country.”
Even Cohnal hated to admit that, but little by little, things were starting to make sense… the followers of the demon god gaining power, the wars, the weird incidents happening all over the world. The question was: where did Zaos and Milliendra stand in all that?
