The Guardians' Throne - The First Magic Swordsman
Chapter 303 - The Only OnesWhen Zaos turned around, he saw Luvon with a spear in his hands, and the tip of the spear had pierced his back. Fortunately, he only attacked and pierced a part below Zaos's right arm. The wound wasn't deep since the space wasn't that big, but the bastard still spun the weapon in order to make Zaos suffer more.
Despite the damage, Zaos tried to turn around and attack Luvon, but he pulled back his spear and moved away from Zaos. Luvon didn't seem much of a fighter, but one didn't have to be an exhausted and wounded Zaos.
"My apologies, Camus," Luvon said. "But it would be a pity to lose a partner right now."
"... I get it, it couldn't be helped," Camus said and then got up while he was holding his left shoulder. "I changed my mind about him.. Let's kill him and end this battle once and for all."
Zaos was having a hard time breathing and looking at the enemies. As if things weren't bad enough, they began to walk around him in order to position one of them on Zaos's blind spot. They will obviously attack simultaneously to make sure that one of them will finish Zaos, which was really troublesome. If Zaos only had a shield…
Zaos sighed and then relaxed his face as if he had accepted the unavoidable, and then those two dashed to attack Zaos at the same time. Camus was in front of him since it was only natural that Zaos would focus on him, while Luvon was going to attack his back with all his might again. In the end, Zaos swung his sword toward Camus. Still, the young commander had anticipated that and jumped backward at the last moment. What he didn't anticipate was the fact that even before he could confirm that Camus escaped, Zaos looked at Luvon and then grabbed the tip of the spear that almost hit his face.
"I hate doing this…" Zaos said while his hand was being cut by the weapon.
Despite the pain, he took the weapon from Luvon and prepared to attack him with his spear. Still, at the last moment, he thrust the weapon in the opposite direction, and then he felt his attack piercing the flesh of something soft. Luvon opened his eyes widely since Zaos had attacked Camus even without looking toward him.
"You guys aren't the only ones who can play mind games," Zaos said.
Even without mana and his eyes, Zaos could feel the approach of most living things, even if they come from his blind spot. That was why their previous tactic failed miserably. Slowly, Camus fell to the ground with the spear in his chest, and then he eventually died.
Luvon tried to step away from Zaos, and he would have succeeded since Zaos's hands were too damaged. However, he suddenly was hit by an Earth Sword that hit his neck and killed him. When Zaos looked in that direction, he saw Nyana approaching.
"Are you…" Nyana stopped her question midway when she saw blood dripping from Zaos head and since the right side of his armor was also red. "Your healing skills are better than mine, so you should hurry up and drink the potions."
"No, I am still poisoned," Zaos said. "You will have to get rid of the poison first."
While Nyana was using Detoxification, Zaos checked the battlefield. They noticed that the mages opened their path using brute strength because Cohnal and Melisse were too busy with the reinforcements Luvon brought. As if that wasn't enough, Zaos saw many siege weapons in the distance on fire. Nyana and the mages had worked hard while Zaos was being toyed with by Camus.
His unit had suffered plenty of damage, but once the news spread across the battlefield, the tide of the battle would change in their favor. Fortunately, it didn't take long. Once Cohnal realized that the commanders had been defeated, he shouted.
"Our Captain killed the enemy's commanders! Those dirt invaders are nothing. Kill them all!" Cohnal shouted.
That wasn't entirely true, but it was a bit too much to expect that they undo the misunderstanding before the end of the battle. Zaos will be sure to clear that up since Nyana deserved the credit and because he also wanted her to become one of his lieutenants.
"Sorry about that," Zaos said. "Let's punish that idiot later."
"I don't mind it," Nyana said. "Anyway, we don't have any potions left, and I am out of mana. Your body should be free from the poison, but it will take a while for your hands to heal since some muscles have been damaged."
"I will ask Halamar to craft some more study gauntlets…" Zaos said and then sighed. "Let's see… most of the enemies knew that I fought their commanders, so if I rejoin the battle, it will help in decreasing their morale even more."
There was an even more effective way to do that, to get the enemies' heads in some spikes and show around the battlefield. Still, from Zaos' perspective, that was a pretty nasty thing to do. He won't complain if his allies do consider how much trouble the mercenaries caused, but he didn't want to go that far.
While Zaos's hands were hurt, he still rejoined the battle… in a sense, he just raised his sword and moved toward the enemies. That was enough to make them retreat. In the blink of an eye, the news about the death of the commanders spread, and both battlefields were affected by it. The mercenaries were good warriors, but without their leaders, they couldn't accomplish anything by themselves. Once the first captain gave the order for their units to retreat, the others did the same. After all, they couldn't win, and even if they do, no one will pay them for their services.
That was a pretty rare incident for a battle of that scale, but in the end, the battle was over after only two hours.
