It felt like lightning had struck right above his head when Kevin heard his father's next words. He was in complete shock, and it felt like his head was spinning as the invisible shattered tape kept replaying Benjamin's words just now.
"You are not the only child of your mother, Kevin. Your mother... has a daughter."
"You are not the only child of your mother, Kevin. Your mother... has a daughter."
"You are not the only child of your mother, Kevin. Your mother... has a daughter."

Those series of words kept playing in his head, and his head felt like exploding. He finally learned the truth about his mother, but the revelation was unexpected.

Benjamin and Charlotte widened their eyes, but then Charlotte hastily swung her arms forward as she replied, "It's not like that, Kevin! Your mother never cheated behind you and your father! Don't you know that your mother loved your father very much?"
Kevin frowned in confusion after hearing the lady's rush statement. After Benjamin told him that his mother had a daughter, he couldn't help but think that his mother had an affair. Probably during her separation from her husband, she 'played' with another man and ended up having an illegitimate child.
That was the scenario played in his head, but now he was confused after Charlotte hastily denied the accusation.
"If my mother indeed didn't have an affair, then how come she had another daughter?"

"Even before you were born into the world, your mother had secretly adopted a child, Kevin."
Benjamin's next words surprised Kevin again, and he immediately responded, "What? My mother adopted a child before I was even born? But why didn't I know anything about it? Why didn't I see the child in our house before?"
Kevin was sure that there was no child in their house when he was still living with his biological parents, and he was also certain that his parents had never mentioned any child during his living with them.
Kevin needed a comprehensive explanation, and he stared at his father as he kept waiting for more explanation.
"Your mother adopted the child secretly because your father disagreed with the adoption plan. You have never seen the child in your house because the child was still living in the orphanage even after your mother adopted her. Your mother only visited her once in a week without your father knowing."
Kevin's heart dropped to the floor. Why did his mother do something like that? Was it because she wanted to have a child back then?
"The child is five years older than you, and your mother kept nurturing her secretly in the orphanage even after you were born. We are the only ones who know about the secret."
"But, why did my mother need to adopt a child even though my father was against the idea?" Kevin questioned Benjamin immediately, but his adoptive father couldn't immediately answer his question as he glanced at his wife once again. Kevin noticed the doubtful gaze again, and he felt even more curious.
His hand, which was still in Kris's grip, was still so cold because he was still nervous.
"That's because the child is the daughter of your mother's best friend, Kevin," Charlotte was the one who answered Kevin's question, and the answer shocked Kevin once again.
"What?" The black-haired scientist asked in surprise. "The child was my mother's best friend's child? But why did my mother adopt the child? Her best friend should be the one who took care of the child, right?"
This issue was confusing, and Kevin felt like his brain was about to explode.
"You are right that your mother's best friend should be the one taking care of the child, but she couldn't do it because..." Benjamin tried to answer, but it seemed that he was hesitant as he paused.. He stared at Kevin doubtfully, and then he continued, "She couldn't take care of her child because she died by suicide after giving birth to the child."
