Sorcerer’s Handbook

Chapter 87: The Vulnerable Medics

“Truth be told, I’m the type who can’t pee if someone’s watching. Could you guys turn around?”

“Really?” Igor glanced over, his lips curling slightly upward, and he let out a light chuckle. “That explains a lot.”

Ashe grumbled and went into a stall.

Langna looked around, a puzzled expression on his face. “What’s so special about this restroom that it has caught the Con Artist’s fancy?”

“This restroom is no different from any other,” Igor said as he moistened his fingertips with clean water and gently cleaned his eyes. “The special thing is that the restroom can serve as a medium for us to deceive the chip.”

“Perhaps you know, before I was imprisoned, I was a Contractor in the insurance industry — of course, my duties weren’t limited to just signing contracts; sales were also part of my job. I didn’t just sell insurance; I had a variety of goods in my hands. After all, it’s all work, I just worked several jobs at the same time.”

Ashe asked curiously, “That sounds quite inspiring. So why were you locked up?”

Igor sighed. “Well, I feel quite wronged about that. I always made sure the customers got the products they desired, yet I was convicted of serious fraud.”

“If I remember correctly,” Langna suddenly said, “your most brilliant feat was making a Wealthy man go broke buying a cup of water.”

“A cup of water? Just ordinary water?”

“The water was anything but ordinary. It was the elixir of life, the origin of all living things, the medium of miracles, the mother nurturing the sky and the earth…”

Ashe fully understood now. Igor was the kind of person who could ace interview questions like ‘Sell this pen to me for $1,000’ with flying colors.

“Alright, your target customers aren’t here, so tone down your sales pitch. Tell us how you use the restroom to cheat the chip.”

Igor explained, “Among the products I used to represent, there was a life-monitoring device that could receive Life Signals sent out by the Miracle Chip and analyze the user’s current physical condition from various vital signs. The device isn’t the key; the important thing is that while studying the functions of the device, I discovered that the Miracle Chip doesn’t send Life Signals continuously, but at fixed intervals. The default frequency is 600 seconds per signal, that is, 10 minutes.”

“The frequency can be adjusted, but the higher it is, the more demanding it is on the receiving Processor. For example, the high-spec device I was selling could receive a signal every 5 seconds, and even without an additional markup, the device itself is extremely expensive.”

“The Processor in Shattered Lake Prison that’s responsible for collecting and analyzing our vital signs is undoubtedly military-grade, but even so, the prison wouldn’t be so extravagant as to have our chips send continuous Life Signals. With the chip’s Restrictions, there’s no way we could escape from Shattered Lake Prison. Even if the interval between signal transmissions was at its maximum, the only effect would be that it would take a bit longer for them to discover if we suddenly died.”

“The only place in the prison where we’re required to send Life Signals continuously is the Arena of the Deathmatch Society. That’s because when we send out Life Signals that indicate we’re unconscious or dead, the Arena immediately imposes Restrictions on our ability to attack, which shows that Life Signals are monitored in real time.”

Ashe sensed that this was crucial information but still didn’t understand how it related to escaping from prison. “It’s an interesting piece of trivia, sure, but what does it have to do with escaping?”

Igor glanced at him, “Suppose you did manage to remove the Chip and it stopped sending Life Signals. What do you think the Processor would make of your situation? Keep in mind that even a corpse would send out a signal.”

Ashe suddenly understood, “It would determine that I’ve removed my Chip, and it would immediately notify the prison that a Prisoner is attempting to escape!”

“Exactly. But in order to escape, we must remove our Chips; otherwise, we won’t be able to even step off this island.”

Ashe nodded. Earlier, while they were observing the harbor, they noticed a yellow line along the shore with the words ‘Please do not cross the yellow line.’

Although the sign was polite with its ‘please,’ for the Prisoners, it represented an insurmountable boundary. The moment their toes touched the yellow line, their bodies would completely freeze, unable to move.

“So, the time between ‘removing the Chip’ and ‘the Processor discovering our escape’ is our safest window for action. During this period, not only are all Restrictions lifted, but the prison is also unaware of our anomaly,” Igor explained, looking around. “This is the time difference we must exploit!”

“To have figured this out is already the limit. As for the Life Signal sending frequency, we can only hope it’s set to the default 10 minutes.”

Langna spoke up, “That’s quite impressive. I thought this was all just foolery at first, but Igor, your insights have forced me to acknowledge that there is hope.”

Even Ronald nodded in agreement, his desire to survive reigniting a spark of rationality within him.

“Not bad for a guy I picked. My judgment is indeed sound,” Ashe complimented himself before asking, “But what’s the use of the men’s Restroom, really?”

Igor smirked, “The Restroom is obviously for excretion. What else would it be for, eating? If you have such a hobby, please feel free to demonstrate.”

Speaking of his years of research, Igor was a bit proud: “Now we know we need to exploit the timing of the Chip’s signal transmission, but there’s another problem to solve—how do we know when the last signal was sent?”

“Death row inmates definitely don’t send signals at the same time; that would overload the Processor momentarily. Therefore, our signal-sending times are likely evenly distributed over the 10 minutes. If the Processor detects a special situation, it will temporarily adjust the signal sending frequency and then reset the signal frequency of all Prisoners to the default after midnight.”

“And these special situations are actually when the Processor needs to immediately receive our Life Signals in order to lift certain Restrictions!”

“In the prison, there are only three places where ‘special situations’ occur.”

Igor raised two fingers, “The first is the Deathmatch Society. The reason is that at the start of a deathmatch, the Chip lifts the attack Restrictions; and when the deathmatch ends, the Chip reinstates the attack Restrictions.”

“These two points in time are when the Processor synchronizes with the Chip, which needs to immediately send Life Signals to the Processor! After the deathmatch ends, the Chip naturally resumes the default Signal Frequency and will send the Life Signal of the combatant after 10 minutes.”

“That means we can intentionally enter a special situation through the Deathmatch Society to change the Chip’s Signal Frequency and fully control the timing difference!”

At this point, even Ashe understood completely.

He looked around, glancing at the urinals: “So the Restroom is the second place?”

Igor smiled, “Theoretically, we could also change the Signal Frequency through a deathmatch, but those are to the death. In comparison, the Restroom is much more convenient.”

“As for why the Restroom can have the same effect as the Arena, it’s naturally because… the prison doesn’t allow us to relieve ourselves just anywhere, haha!”

Langna was momentarily stunned but couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

Since the prison requires Prisoners to only excrete in the Restroom, every time a Prisoner enters the Restroom, the prison Processor actively lifts their ‘excretion permissions’!

Just like the Arena, this is also a special state!

If you didn’t have this permission, even if you were so constipated that you were about to burst, the Chip would forcibly control your sphincter to keep your backdoor tightly closed, not letting a single drop spill. If you were truly full, you’d only be able to vomit it out through your mouth.

For the Prisoners, this is doubtlessly an indescribable humiliation, which is why Igor and Langna, two old jailbirds, burst into laughter — this harsh rule set by the prison has become an accomplice to their escape. The marvelous irony of this situation could not help but provoke their mirth.

However, how much of that laughter was self-mockery, no one knew.

“Then where’s the third place?” Ashe asked.

Igor’s laughter paused as he looked toward Langna.

Langna thought for a moment, “Is it the Couples Room?”

Like the Restroom, the Couples Room also temporarily lifts certain Restrictions for Death row inmates, and even relaxes the limits on attacking, after all, sexual preferences are free.

But like the Arena, one must apply to enter the Couples Room, so it’s obviously not as convenient as the Restroom.

Plus, the Couples Room requires more than two people to apply. Langna and Ronald aside, is Ashe going to apply to enter the Couples Room with Igor?

Igor, leaning against the wall, said, “Now that you know all the secrets you need to know, let me formally explain the Escape Plan.”

“Aren’t we looking for a fifth member?” Ashe asked, “We still need someone responsible for quick movement and healing support.”

Langna is a Moonshadow Werewolf skilled in direct combat, serving as the vanguard; Ronald specializes in Gun Technique and setting traps, acting as the long-range damage dealer. As for the Medic responsible for healing and leading their rapid movement, Ashe and Igor have been searching for the past few days but have yet to find anyone.

What, you ask, are Ashe and Igor responsible for? Igor handles human resources, and Ashe is in charge of core technology; of course, they wouldn’t be involved in Battle!

“We’ve looked everywhere possible; we can’t delay any longer. Not everything can be fully prepared before action—rushing into battle is the norm since criminal opportunities are fleeting,” Igor glanced at him, “Besides, even if we could wait, can you?”

Indeed, Ashe doesn’t believe that Professor Sylin will simply let him live out his years peacefully in Shattered Lake Prison.

Leaving Shattered Lake one day sooner means escaping from Professor Sylin’s schemes one day earlier.

“The Escape Plan is simple: blend in with the Transport Ship, then leave.”

Igor dipped his hand in water and drew a Boat on the mirror, “But if we want to safely board the Transport Ship, we need not only to disable the Miracle Chip but also a legitimate identity.”

“Interestingly, inside Shattered Lake Prison, there happens to be a group of people who can directly board the Transport Ship without any application, and they are the ones whom we can impersonate without arousing anyone’s suspicion—”

Igor drew a Crow Mask on the mirror.

“That would be the vulnerable Medics.”
