Chapter 1619: Spirit Department
Shara wore a dark hood, covering most of her face.
"Do I really need to keep wearing this even here?" she asked.
"Until we're both out of the area, we'll have to hide ourselves," Ning said. "Do you want people to come rob you?"
Shara shivered a little and shook her head.
The both of them walked out of the tavern, making their way through the narrow roadways, moving along the side to let the carriages through.
Through tiny roads and tinnier alleyways, they arrived at the main road that was much larger and freer for anyone to move through.
Ning and Shara walked by the side of the road, making their way toward the eastern side, which Shara vaguely remembered the way to.
Ning was prepared to ask for a way should she give him the slightest hint of not recognizing where he was.
Something shined in the light toward the road and he turned around. He saw a carriage coming down the road, and on it was a driver at the front with an illusory white glow right next to him.
Another Spirit.
"Do you see that?" Ning asked, discreetly pointing toward the incoming carriage.
"See what?" Shara asked.
"That small white light next to the driver. That's a Spirit," Ning told her.
Shara looked, her face scrunched up in confusion. "Where?" she asked.
"Right there, next to the man," Ning pointed even as the carriage passed them. "Did you not see it?"
Shara shook her head.
"Huh?" Ning frowned. What the hell was going on? How could she not see the Spirit? Unless... 'Shit!' Ning thought. 'Is she not a Spirit Detective?'
The quest for 20 points was to find out what her profession was. Unfortunately, it appeared as though even before they got to the testing grounds, she couldn't see the spirit at all.
'What the hell could she be?' Ning thought. He hoped those people who tested these sorts of people knew what was up with her.
15 minutes later, after nearly taking the wrong turn twice, Ning and Shara arrived in front of a large white building with words plastered at the front of it in a grand fashion.
'Whitebridge Branch of the Spirit Department of Moliya'
It was a large building with some grandeur.
"Where did you keep the gold coins?" Ning asked her.
"I have them with me," Shara answered with a low voice. "Why?"
"They'll be testing you. Don't let them see the coins," Ning said. "Actually, it would be better if I kept them."
Shara trusted Ning, but not that much.
Ning shrugged. "Just don't make it clink around. Keep it well hidden."
"No worries," she said. "They won't make any sound."
She seemed confident regarding that, so Ning let it be. They then walked into the building and were immediately met with a busy hall with people walking all around, not a single person stopping by to check what was going on.
Ning was a little overwhelmed by all of it, not to mention the young girl next to him who had never seen this many people at once even when a wedding feast was being thrown in the tavern she worked in.
"Wh-what now?" she asked.
"Now... we get you registered," Ning said. "I think."
He had some 'memories' of going through all of this so he had a vague idea of what was to be done next. There was one thing that was annoying about these memories and it was the fact that they had regressed just as a normal human's would.
So, Ning couldn't be absolutely sure that what he remembered was correct. It had been such a long time since he had to face such a problem. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Ning helped Shara get registered for a test and a few minutes later, a person came out to meet them.
The woman was a short one, with a somewhat pretty appearance, and a wide smile. She had her hair in a bun, with two white ornate clips keeping them together while wearing a simple white dress herself.
"Are you here to get tested today?" the woman asked Ning.
Ning shook his head. "Not me. Her," he said, pointing to Shara who was next to him.
The woman turned to look at Shara. "Ah, I see. You are Shara," she said. "How old are you?"
"15," Shara said meekly.
"Quite a young age to awaken at," the woman said. "I myself awakened at 19." She wrote down something on the clipboard she held in front of her.
"Do you have any identification material on you?" the woman asked. "I don't suppose you have any documents to identify yourself, do you?"
Shara quickly dug through her pockets and brought out something. It was a folded parchment that she handed to the lady.
The lady unfolded it and raised an eyebrow. She smiled a little. "A birth certificate will do, I suppose," she said. "Do you have any guardians?"
Shara shook her head. "My grandmother was the only one I had, and she about a year ago."
"Oh, I'm sorry," she said. "You're not her guardian then?"
Ning shook his head. "I'm a Spirit Detective," he said, bringing out his license. "I found out about her powers and brought her to get registered."
"Oh! Thank you for that," the woman said. "Shara, will you come with me so we can get you tested?"
Shara nodded and was about to walk when stopped and said, "Umm... can he come along too?" She was pointing at Ning.
"I don't suggest so since he isn't your guardian, but if you don't mind him coming, then sure," the woman said. "Do you wish to come and watch?"
Ning nodded. "I would love to."
"Alright," the woman said. "Please do not help her in any way since we will be just testing her
today."
"Of course," Ning said. "I have no intention of messing anything for her after I brought her all
the way here."
The woman smiled. "If you'll follow me then," she said and walked on.
Ning and Shara followed her.
