Chapter 120: A Happy Old Couple
Although Yan’er was young, she was also very sensible. She knew that there was a baby in Su Danhong. Thus, she took on the responsibility of taking care of Xiao Renren, um, which was to play with Xiao Renren.
If she had any request, she would not go to Su Danhong, but to Ji Jianyun.
Ji Jianyun didn’t know how to react. “I’m your third uncle. Your dad hasn't come back yet, but he'll be back in a few days. If you call me dad, your real dad will be mad at me when he is here.”
He explained this for such a long time, but Yan'er didn't quite understand. She took the dried persimmon, and she was happy to share it with her brother.
She could eat it herself. She bit the skin and gave it to Xiao Renren to try. He sucked on it, and was very obedient in waiting for her to feed him.
They took turns eating the dried persimmon. In fact, it was all eaten by Yan’er, but she really thought that her younger brother was also eating it. Xiao Renren just sucked in it for the taste. He occasionally took a bite and was very satisfied. So between the two of them, they finished the dried persimmon and were very happy.
Although Ji Jianyun took a lot to sell at the college town, there was still a lot left at home. Ji Jianyun also went to buy a box of apples, which was late in ripening. It was different from his family's varieties, and his family had already finished picking their apples.
Su Danhong’s daily life was now eating an apple a day. Then, she would think about delicious things to eat. After that, when she slept at night, she required her husband to kiss her and hug her. She felt that her life was pretty decadent, because she had both food and man!
Her main job was being responsible for taking care of herself. Well, because she didn’t like Ji Jianyun's poor cooking skills, she still cooked food for herself so that she ate well.
As for other things, she didn’t have to worry about it. It was not as excessive as Ji Jianyun thought. She did all the things that were convenient for her.
Every day she went to the backyard to water the cabbage, radish and celery in the greenhouse. Then, she watered the chrysanthemum seedlings.
The last time the chrysanthemums were sold, they were sold before the Mid-Autumn Festival in August. They were also sold in the college town at a very good price. The chrysanthemums grown by Su Danhong were sold for a price of more than 60 yuan.
This was still half the price of Aunt Hu’s flowers. It was 120 yuan there!
Mother Ji was a little curious, so she asked about it. When she received the reply, she didn't ask anything else.
Without hiding it, Su Danhong said that she was intimidated when she heard that it was selling that much money. Immediately, her eyes became softer and kinder, almost like she was a golden child.
In Mother Ji's mind, Su Danhong’s status was incredibly high. Su Danhong always had her way, and no one could change her mind.
To Mother Ji’s knowledge, she had never seen anyone who could make more money than her third daughter-in-law.
Making money was a very difficult thing to do. Yet, it was as simple as eating and drinking water for Lao San’s wife.
Before, when it came to embroidery, how were others unable to learn, but she did? If she worked hard on it, she could produce two pieces of embroidery in a month. For one or two hundred yuan, didn’t it make them happier?
There was also the orchard, and the sheep and the chicken farm, which others could do.
Meanwhile, growing flowers was meticulous work. There were so many families in the village, but only Lao Hu’s family could grow it. Thus, it was still a secret.
But look at Lao San’s wife. She just casually watered it and put it in the sun. The chrysanthemums grew very well, and the money would eventually come.
Chrysanthemums were really pretty. She had seen it, and despite not knowing how to appreciate it, she thought that the chrysanthemums Lao San’s wife had grown were really high-grade. It was even better than the Lao Hu family had grown!
Therefore, Mother Ji was no longer surprised by whether she could earn money or not, but she was still shocked by the ways she did it. It didn’t matter if she did the actual work or not, no one else could take away her source of income!
Once again, Mother Ji was satisfied with her foresight. She really felt that the old fortune teller had some true skills back then and made accurate predictions to take a wife from the Lao Su family. This brought prosperity for all living things. The high betrothal requirements didn’t matter, because once this wife was married, it would be absolutely worth it.
She followed it and it was accurate!
Not knowing that her mother-in-law’s thoughts were growing so wild, Su Danhong said, “Mother, I think that you look better recently. Did you sleep well last night?”
“I did, don't worry. Your father and I are feeling much better now,” Mother Ji replied with a smile.
From time to time, Ji Jianyun sent her some herbs for her to soak her feet.
The old couple had lived a long time, and now they enjoyed the fortunes their daughter-in-law gave them. They also knew that Jianyun had a good income now, so they were more open about things. They soaked their feet with what was given to them, and it was really very warm.
There was also the fact that they ate well every day. They had meat, eggs, fresh vegetables, nourishing soup and so on. Plus, they did some light work every day and received enough exercise. The couple looked really good.
Although they were getting older, who in the village wouldn’t say that the old couple looked younger than they did last year?
When Mother Ji was about to go up the mountain, Su Danhong said, “Mother, I boiled a sesame chicken soup. Wait a minute. I'll scoop some out for you.”
“No, just keep it for yourself,” Mother Ji said at once.
“I can eat it anytime.” Su Danhong smiled and continued, “Mother, wait. Don't go yet, or I'll have to ask Jianyun to bring it up later.”
With that, she went to scoop out the chicken soup. There was a chicken leg, a chicken wing and some chicken breast. One container could not hold too much. After two bowls worth of soup was scooped, it was full.
Mother Ji saw her take it out and said, “Just keep it and eat it yourself.”
“It’s not much. Mother, take it up and eat with father while it's hot,” Su Danhong said.
“Okay.” Mother Ji took it away.
It was three o'clock in the afternoon. It was snack time, and this snack was really nutritious.
Once Mother Ji reached the top, the old couple ate the really delicious soup. With the sesame and chicken meat, it tasted very good.
“You have to take good care of yourself. When Jianyun went to sell things in the college town this time, you caught a cold. He wouldn’t have asked his second brother-in-law for help,” Mother Ji said.
Father Ji said, “I don't know about that.”
“Jianwen and Lili will be back tomorrow, and so will Yunyun,” Mother Ji turned and said.
“If they come back, then they are back.” Father Ji put down the bowl and didn't care much about it.
Whether his son, daughter-in-law, or daughter came back or not made no difference to him. Yet, all old people liked harmony, so it was better for them to come back, especially since his family’s situation was better this year. He also wanted to have a good New Year celebration.
Father Ji remembered something and said, “Yan'er is now calling Jianyun and Danhong her parents. You have to talk to Lao Si’s wife about this.”
“What’s wrong with that? Children that young don’t understand. She’ll call anyone who is kind to her mom and dad.” Mother Ji doesn't take it seriously.
Wasn't that what kids do? Back then, Jianwen and Lili went back to Jiangshui City and had left Yan'er behind. How old was Yan'er then? Children were so forgetful, so it would be a miracle if she remembered them.
She called her third aunt and uncle her mom and dad, which proved that Lao San and his wife were really good to the Yan'er. Otherwise, could Yan'er be raised so well? Mother Ji would even dare to claim that even if she went back to her biological parents, it was not as good as at her third uncle's family.
