Geomancy Master (2)
But a majority of these people present are not young. They stood in front of Mo Linyuan, each boasting themselves to the point of being something heaven has and earth doesn’t*, and being able to brag can be considered their special ability to make a living. But Mo Linyuan didn’t understand these, and felt muddled when hearing them.
* “天上有,地下无” means “heaven has, earth doesn’t”, meaning it’s a good thing that only exists in the sky and exceeded the scope of the mortal, being the extreme.
Some of they said they’re good at numerology*, some said they’re good at astronomy, and there’s also some who are good at finding the dragon pressure point. Some even say that when they were traveling around the world**, they found a precious pressure point that could be immediately presented to the emperor.
* Numerology is the method of using numbers, or birthdate characters, relating to someone to determine their fate and luck.
** 走江湖: Not exactly traveling the world – these people are in a profession that is in the same category as selling arts, fortune-telling, selling medicine, and more; back in the old times, they had to travel around for their profession. 江湖, meaning rivers and lakes, represent the nation’s characteristics, thus the world.
Ye Mu listened on the side, thinking that these people should all have some kind of skill, but those can’t be counted as great skills. Perhaps it’s a kind of intuition?
Until the last person walked up front.
“Your majesty, this lowly one* is adept at geomancy. Regardless if it’s astronomy or geography, attracting Yang or searching for the dragon (point), this lowly one is skilled at all!”
* The polite speech of how a person of lower social status would say “I”
His way of boasting shamelessly had everyone raising their eyebrows and casting side glances at him, just to find out that he was merely a young scholar in his twenties, and their expressions were even more dissatisfied.
“Truly shameless boasting! Geomancy is a study including all living things. Young fellow, how old are you? You dare to say that you understand everything?”
An old geomancy master said this, and that youngster finally raised his head.
“Learning things depends not on age, but rather talent and experience. This lowly one, although young, is rich and abundant in experience! My talent is ordinary, but compared with everyone, it’s considered outstanding!”
“You!” Those few old fellows discontentedly glared at him immediately, and Ye Mu also saw that person’s appearance.
The other geomancy masters’ faces appeared to have hints of the vicissitudes of life, and a majority are quite skinny. Yet this man had a baby face, appearing to be very prominently small. Moreover, that bright pair of eyes are the kind of eyes that would leave people unable to forget after having a look.
“Silence!” The eunuch on the side said, and open military ground immediately quieted down.
At this time, Ye Mu smiled and said, “Rather than disputing like this, which isn’t even a solution, how about this? Let me ask you all a question, and you all have to answer truthfully.”
Everyone knew Ye Mu’s abilities. Hearing that she wanted to ask a question, all respectfully stood properly with a manner of speaking without reserve*.
* Means that they’re willing to say all they know in respect to Ye Mu’s request of honesty
Ye Mu said while smiling, “Although geomancy and physiognomy* don’t belong together, everyone should more or less know a bit of palmistry and physiognomy when traveling the world.”
* Practice of assessing a person’s face, relating it to fortune, destiny, etc.
Everyone promptly nodded, “We know, we can all be regarded as proficient at this.”
“Then fine, all of you step forward one at a time, and look at my palm features. I want to know how you guys would assess mine.”
“This…” Everyone looked at each other in dismay. Looking at Ye Mu’s palm features wouldn’t offend the emperor, right?
Mo Linyuan could still be regarded as open-minded. It’s just looking at palm features, and he nodded, “I permit it, all of you just step forward one by one.”
He felt this method of Ye Mu’s perhaps is useful, since her numerological fate was originally different from ordinary people. Perhaps, if there’s someone out of these people who can really understand it, not talking about other things, just proving that he really has skills, it’s worth it to keep them and put them in an important position.
Does Ye Mu’s physiognomy and palmistry still need to be looked at?
Everyone secretly thought, Being able to become the emperor’s cherished one*, could that life still be a bad life?
* Funny thing but the actual term they use here for cherished one directly translates as “heart muscle”. Since your heart muscle is very important and kinda relates to your innermost feelings, ya know?
Furthermore, even if something’s wrong, they wouldn’t dare to say it!
Ye Mu saw through their concern, smiled and said, “Whatever you guys see, you can say it all directy. I promise to not hold anyone responsible, but there’s one point. You all have to speak truthfully. Anyone who makes things up will be killed without mercy.”
She smiled while saying the three words “killed without mercy”, having everyone’s heart trembling, and they became alert and combat-ready*.
* Not exactly in battle, but it meant they were preparing to face the challenge internally.
