278 Bonding Through The Ages (2)
(Jane’s PoV)
After getting what we were searching for, we returned to the camp to join in the fun -if watching the girls had a hard time setting up their tents considered as fun, of course. Sitting on a plastic tool, we sat back without having any intention to help them while munching on cookies.
Why should we help them? Wouldn’t we disturb their ploy to attract the attention of the boys if we did help them? Who would be so stupid to do that? It was really the perfect decision to sit and watch.
When the girls finally called out for the boys to help them, I instinctively looked beside me only to find our eyes met -the four of us. An understanding smile appeared on our face as we realized that we were thinking the same.
This is getting good, I thought. After communicating mostly with ghost for months, I finally gained a human to human relationship and it wasn’t even a romantic one. Oh, how I miss this kind of interaction so much!
After confirming that we had the same thought, it was getting easier to connect with them. Behind their shy and indifference personality -of course I wasn’t talking about Daisy-, there was the basic behavior of human in the face of several special circumstances; mocking. We didn’t talk about it. We uttered no words, but we all knew what we was going on each other’s head at this moment.
In no time, the boys swarmed into the girls’ area to help them. They even donned on various expression and reaction on their faces. It was truly a scene to watch, observing the difference messages their expression and eyes sent to the other people. Watching them behaving like this, I suddenly remembered that Tom has mentioned about it before, about how amusing my reaction back then towards the boys.
Indeed. I was ridiculous. But, I wouldn’t blame these girls. After all, I already had two men by my side but these girls might not have any boyfriend. So, let them be.
I shook my head lightly. If I found it ridiculous because I already had boyfriends, what about these three? I turned my eyes towards Daisy, Yuni, and Alivia who were still quietly munching on their cookies while watching the ‘scene’ in front of us.
.....
The trio might have sensed my stare as they turned their eyes away from the drama in front of us and stared back at me.
“What is it?” Daisy asked before taking a small bite of her cookie.
Smiling, I could only shake my head. “Nothing. I don’t want to sound so nosy.”
“I am the one who will judge whether you are being nosy or not. Now tell me. What’s inside your head?” Daisy didn’t look particularly curious but she made herself clear that she insisted to know. It could be that she was really good at masking her expression, or she was just being dominant at me.
Smiling sheepishly, I scratched my non-itchy nose and said, “Well, I was wondering whether the three of you have a boyfriend already. You know, I can see some jealousy in the eyes of others, but your gaze don’t even waver. So, I wonder if it’s because you don’t find it interesting or ...” I let my voice trailed off.
“I have a fiancé.” Daisy didn’t even miss a beat when she answered. She sounded firm and calm, as expected of our goddess.
“Me too...” The timid Alivia shyly admitted with a blush on her face.
“Boys are such a nuisance.” Yuni, on the other hands, scoffed with disdain.
Did I say that she was shy by nature? Scratch that. She looked like she disdained all boys, yet I was sure she was straight. It was just all these boys probably looked immature in her eyes. Was that the case?
“Then, what kind of man do you like?” I curiously asked.
Yuni drifted her eyes from the bunch of those showing off boys towards the camp of the lecturers. There were several young lecturers and she looked like she was scanning the area, looking for someone.
“Someone with Sir Sanjaya’s bearing, but less handsome. Handsome man is too troublesome.” She grunted then she looked away without any hints of infatuation, as if she was just telling us a common information.
My heart stirred. It was not a secret that many girls fell head over heels to this man. I guessed Yuni was one of them, but I couldn’t detect the fangirling tone in her voice. Or she might have hidden it wonderfully. Or, again, she did mean it when she said ‘less handsome’.
“You don’t like handsome man?” I carefully asked her.
“Who doesn’t like handsome man? Of course I do. But, for my future partner, I don’t want overly handsome man. It will only bring trouble. Sir Sanjaya’s looks are above adequate. So, nah, I don’t like him that way, if you mean to ask me that.” She smirked after replying to my question almost immediately.
If Sanji knew that someone was despising his handsome look, I bet he would be stunned for several days until his mind had a nice talk with his heart. He wouldn’t get angry, but it would shock him for sure. I was actually curious with his expression if I ever told him about it.
“Fine.” I murmured my response.
“Now you know the reason, right? Let’s continue watching.” Daisy patted my shoulder and continued munching on her snacks.
Several minutes later, we gathered in the middle of the camping site. The spot was intentionally created for this kind of occasion. They received some motivation and had some deep talk with each other. It was cool, but as the sun started to go down, I couldn’t help but notice some energy fluctuation nearby. I had sealed some of my power so that I couldn’t see any of ‘them’.
But it didn’t mean I lost my sensitivity around me. To be honest, I found it easier to feel them during the changes of light to dark. I had started counting the moment I reached this place but the number kept on increasing after the sun was starting to disappear from the west horizon. After all, I thought there was something odd with this activity. It was true, it meant to create a bond among students, but the fact that this place was booked when there were many spots that could be opened for public people made me uneasy.
Was it just for the sake of advertisement? Or was it for something else?
As the one who sat at the back of the rows, I couldn’t help but look back towards the trees behind. I could feel some pairs of eyes were watching us. If I were to open the seal and see the shape of creatures eyeing us with greed, I was afraid I couldn’t control myself and end up beating them.
Who knew whether they were the guardian of the land or shadows sent by other people.
