Chapter 12: Experimenting With Fire Magic
After a long night's rest, William returned to the field outside his house. He launched a fireball in the air as a test, noting the increased mana control, fireball speed, and explosion radius since his last upgrade.
I can't be too sure, but I think this will injure just about any normal person in the Qi Refinement Realm. The main problem is that I probably won't be able to react to a Cultivator's attack either, I'm too slow. William thought.
In other books and movies, comparing an ordinary person with a Cultivator was the difference between a child and an adult. Will had high attack power as a Fire Mage, but there was little difference to his overall speed or defense.
System, how can I use the Fire Element to move faster?
-Request requires 2 Potential Points. Yes/No?
2 points this time? Fine..
-Fire Magic is not ideal for increasing one's speed. Wind, Lightning, and Light Magic are all good alternatives, among many others. With the explosive nature of the Fire Element, you may be able to propel yourself forward with the recoil effect in the future, but this will also cause damage to the user and requires the assistance of the Earth Element.
The explanation wasn't too detailed, but William had a few ideas on how to make this work based on his understanding of Chemistry. He has the Life Element already, so as long as there's enough Mana, William could technically heal himself right after the explosion.
That has to hurt though..but it's better than being eaten by a Magical Beast. Will thought.
Unfortunately as the System stated, Will doesn't have the Earth Element to generate combustible material.
He decided to try the System's method in the future, but for now he still wanted to expand his use of the Fire Element. If Will couldn't improve his speed, he would increase defense.
Fire mana circulated throughout William's body, which was directed and gathered in both of his palms. He then performed a swimming motion while still standing, causing a wall of flames to appear a few meters in front of William.
Not a bad result, and that only took 10 mana. Will didn't have much difficulty using Fire Magic this way, probably because of the current C Rank Affinity and the simplicity of the move.
-Developed a new magic spell: +1 Potential Point
-Host can choose to name his new spell, or the System can generate one itself.
Let's call it Flame Wall. William felt it was a somewhat simple name, but suitable. The Flame Wall would mostly be used as a defensive spell to block weaker magic, but Will could also use it to obstruct his opponent's vision if used well.
-New Spell: Flame Wall
Since the first spell was easy to create and he spent almost no mana, William decided to create a few more spells. The first was a simple Flamethrower spell, which was a higher intensity Fireball for close-range combat that drained mana by the second.
He also created a Flame Ring spell, which spat an arc of flames in all directions. The spell was very weak, but had a wide Area of Effect, perfect for dealing with groups of weak enemies. Anyone who saw William would find it somewhat odd though, as he would spin in a circle while performing the spell.

With these new spells, William was confident he could survive a fight with normal Qi Refinement beasts. He first checked with the Guild for any new quests, but Jenny was angry with him for some unknown reason. He picked up a Lifeshroom Quest sheet, then made another trip to the Livingwood Forest, this time with a backpack.
He had previously only explored a small portion of the forest's peripherals. Will knew he wasn't a very lucky person. He assumed if he could find treasure in one area there had to be more in the others! William's eyes had a unique sparkle that would make anyone want to hide their treasures.
Will had just entered the Livingwood Forest when he spotted a magical beast. It was another Liffox, but looked slightly stronger than the last one. I thought Magical Beasts here were rare. he complained.
A fireball was launched at the Liffox without hesitation.
The Liffox dodged to the right, narrowly avoiding the fireball. It growled before rushing at William to close the distance.
'Flame Wall!'
The beast was forced to slow down by the wall of flames and was about to go around when a fireball flew through the flames and struck it on the shoulder. The Liffox was thrown backward by the impact and sustained heavy injuries.
The Liffox used the Life Element to recover but it was still on fire and could only prevent the injuries from getting worse.
William was still behind the Flame Wall and couldn't be sure how much damage he did to the Liffox, as the wall concealed both the Liffox's vision and his. To be safe, he backed away from the Flame Wall to increase the distance between himself and the fox.
The wall went down and the Liffox was still struggling to stand, so William proceeded to launch another fireball. This one was aimed at the beast's head but was slightly off-target and impacted the base of its neck, still finishing off the Liffox.
-Defeated Liffox: +1 Potential Point
The fight wasn't much of a challenge with William's current strength, but he was disappointed when he saw the rewards.freeωebnovēl.c૦m
System, why did I only get one point this time?
-Request requires 1 Potential Point. Yes/No?
'Yes..'
-The host earns extra points when killing the first beast of its species. Any further kills are only worth a specific number of Potential Points. Most Magical Beasts in the Qi Refinement Realm are worth 1 Potential Point.
Thinking about this made sense to William. In the future, he would have to watch for unique enemies that would be worth a lot of points.
Even though he spent the point just gained from the Liffox, William didn't think this question was a waste. Upgrading his Magic already costs 100 Potential Points, so there would probably be enemies in the future that give just as much.
William continued into the other parts of the forest. He didn't spot any other Magical Beasts, even when he returned to the location where the Life Vein was absorbed.
The tree had become somewhat dull and the vitality was receding. There were only a few Lifeshrooms in the area that had recently grown, but they were still too immature to be picked. William didn't think much of the situation. He moved on to other parts of the forest.
As he traveled along the Outer Ring of the Livingwood Forest, William killed more Liffox and earned 4 Potential Points. He was only 11 points from being able to upgrade the Fire Element again, and he grew more familiar with the usage of his new spells.
Without Cultivation, William couldn't sense the realms of the Liffox he killed, but based on the Wind Wolf Briar fought earlier it was safe to say the strongest ones were somewhere between the 4th and 6th level of Qi Refinement.
