Park Noah’s body plunged sideways, evading by an inch the sharp dagger that flashed past her neck. The blade pierced through her robe, tearing it apart and cutting along a few strands of her hair.
The passengers composed themselves, grumbling at the sudden disturbance. Soon, confused murmurs erupted in the train as apricot threads drifted into the air and fell on them.
“What were you just saying? What is this thing?”
Thump. Park Noah came to her senses by the pounding throb of her heart, immediately feeling her nape with her trembling hands. She knew instinctively that whoever threw the dagger was certainly aiming for her neck. Had Kyle Leonard pulled her a second later, the blade would have grazed her neck and her blood would have soaked the floor.
Horror enveloped Park Noah when she realized she was still under Muell’s invisibility spell. How could someone have targeted precisely at a person hidden from sight! She forced through the restless crowd, confident as she remained unseen.
Crouched in the corner where they hid, Kyle Leonard whispered to her in a hurry. “Are you okay? Keep your head down.”
His violet orbs stared at her exactly, even though Park Noah couldn’t see herself. Without waiting for her response, Kyle Leonard pressed her head down and swept away the strands of hair on the back of her neck.
Paralyzed by terror, Park Noah could barely manage to speak in her quivering voice. “Ka, I don’t think I’m going to be able to do it… It doesn’t hurt.”
“That person’s insane, aiming at your neck in a crowded train,” Kyle Leonard hissed, his jaw clenched.
The next instance, they felt a sudden gust of heat from their side. Black flames engulfed Muell’s body, his long eyes glaring with rage. “I’m going to kill you!”
“Wait, Mu! Put out that fire and be invisible, too.” The investigator attempted to pacify the furious dragon. Meanwhile, Park Noah drew in deep breaths to hush her racing heart. Just moments ago, her life was hanging by a thread, unbeknownst to her.
However, what lingered in her mind was the alarming fact that someone saw through the invisibility spell. Why…? How?
“It was likely not an ordinary assassin.” Kyle Leonard muttered, showing her the dagger, its handle carved with an inscription that glowed blue.
“This dagger is a magical item that disables any magic,” he continued.
“Is there a wizard in Yulem?”
“Those who possess magical abilities in Laurent must unconditionally register with the Ministry of Magic. All wizards are thoroughly managed by the Ministry of Magic, how-”
Kyle Leonard was interrupted by a vibration. The invisibility spell has started to lose its effect. There was no time for discussion. With his small hands, Muell quickly strengthened the spell. But as more mana was used, Park Noah grew weaker.
Aware of the spell’s toll on Park Noah, he muttered, “You can’t go any further in this state. It’s also risky to move together.”
“What? Then how-“
Before she could finish, the train rattled and her body propelled forward. With more than two hundred passengers on board, the train chugged, the busy platform slowly disappearing behind the windows.
Sh*t. The train’s leaving.
It meant that they were stuck in the train with magic-wielding assassins until they reached their destination, the capital. Park Noah shuddered at the thought, her head beginning to spin. Her opponents were skilled magicians who specialized in assassination. Meanwhile, her companions were…
An investigator who heads the branch of Tezeba, serving as the general manager of the entire Laurent district, and a dragon. Oh, right.
She glanced at the man before her whose handsome face was slightly distorted, perhaps because of the generous amount of calculations in his mind, and felt reassured; his expression was not of a frightened coward.
So, I’m the only one who’s incompetent in this trio… No, with a suitcase full of Elonora’s inventions, I’m sure I’m not a very useless human being.
“If we don’t make it as planned, we’ll have to go up.”
Park Noah stared at Kyle Leonard in disbelief. Noticing he was dead serious, she asked, “On a running train?”
“It hasn’t picked up speed yet and it’s going to maintain this speed all the way until the railroad divides into north and west. Besides, it’s not impossible to move on a moving train.”
“….” Slowly, she shifted her gaze outside the window where the scenery flashed across her eyes.
That is definitely not slow. If I go up there, I’m going to fly back and forth like a paper doll.
“If you don’t feel well, Mu will have to stop using magic. In that case, two hundred people will recognize that you are Eleonora Asil, but-”
“You know I’m not going to do that, right? I’ll do it. I’ll do my best!”
What am I going to do? I’m just Park Noah with a suitcase!
Park Noah bit her lip, suppressing the urge to roll down and cry. Contrary to the despondent woman, Kyle Leonard gave her a wink, which was a comical proof that he did not see her.
