How to Live as a Wandering Knight

โ€œAre you more humble than I thought?โ€

โ€œHumble? What do you mean. . .!โ€

โ€œAnyway, I understand. I will speak as the bishop wishes.โ€

Upon hearing Johanโ€™s words, the bishop sighed in relief. The most difficult part had been resolved.

โ€œBut if an inspector comes, wonโ€™t this splendid mansion be a bit risky?โ€

โ€œBrother, youโ€™re still naive. Would an inspector dislike gold? Would a judge refuse gold? Such luxury can easily be overlooked.โ€

Of course, they didnโ€™t hand over gold coins openly. They would โ€˜accidentallyโ€™ find books or valuables that the inspector or judge was interested in and present them as gifts.

It was something they had done many times, and it was what the bishop was best at.

โ€œArenโ€™t you the naive one, bishop? If youโ€™re going to handle things, do it properly. Normally, it might be fine, but now youโ€™re under attack from the order. And yet, you still try to solve things with bribes as usual. . . What if an adversary or opponent sent by your rival comes?

Or someone who canโ€™t be bought with such means? Itโ€™s a time when not even a minor fault should be found.โ€

Johanโ€™s reproach made the bishopโ€™s face turn red. He had hit a sore spot.

Long stays in high positions dull oneโ€™s sense of reality and make one insensitive to danger. The bishop was still not out of his reverie.

โ€œThat. . . that makes sense.โ€

โ€œFar from overlooking, they might use it as a flaw to exaggerate.โ€

โ€œI see. Iโ€™ll have the servants clear out the items in the mansion.โ€

โ€œBishop, people are gathered outside praying. How can you move the items?โ€

โ€œAt night, when there are no people. . .โ€

โ€œThese people pray even at night.โ€

โ€œWhat?! What are the night guards doing?! Why arenโ€™t they dispersing them?!โ€

Johan looked at the bishop as if he couldnโ€™t believe it. Forcing the praying people to leave would only cause trouble.

Realizing this, the bishop coughed awkwardly.

โ€œBrother, what should we do then?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s distribute them. To the people outside.โ€

โ€œWhat. . . what. . . what. . .โ€

Bishop clutched his heart, more startled than when he encountered a gargoyle.

โ€œAbsolutely not! How could we do such a thing!

Watching the bishop, who was more obsessed with gold than merchants, Johan said.

โ€œBishop, now is the time to put aside your greed. Isnโ€™t there something more important than gold?โ€

โ€œNo! What else is there?โ€

โ€œFor more gold, let it go for a while.โ€

Johan held the bishopโ€™s shoulder, looked into his eyes, and spoke. Bishop felt overwhelmed by the strength of Johanโ€™s spirit and averted his gaze.

โ€œ. . .I understand.โ€

โ€œYou have many other mansions, bishop. Donโ€™t be too sad about clearing out a few things.โ€

โ€œCutting off one of ten fingers still hurts!โ€

In agony, the bishop eventually agreed. He was convinced by Johanโ€™s words.

โ€œCall the mercenaries.โ€

With the bishopโ€™s permission and authority, Johan called the mercenaries. It wasnโ€™t to devise a scheme for the greedy bishop. Obviously, he had something else in mind.

โ€œFrom now on, weโ€™ll gather items from the mansion and distribute them to the citizens outside.โ€

โ€œ????โ€

โ€œHas His Excellency passed away?โ€

One of the mercenaries showed a natural reaction. Otherwise, it wouldnโ€™t have made sense.

โ€œNo. He originally intended to distribute them to the citizens, but he was afraid that he might not be able to do so and meet his death.โ€

โ€œSir Knight, the bishop may be possessed by a malevolent spirit. Canโ€™t you exorcise the malevolent spirit like you did before?โ€

โ€œBe quiet. From now on, we will gather the gold and treasures inside the mansion and scatter them outside. Everyone pick one thing you want.โ€

โ€œ. . .!โ€

The mercenariesโ€™ faces brightened.

โ€œThank you! Thank you!โ€

โ€œThe bishop is perfectly fine! I spoke foolishly!โ€

Johan called Galambos out from among the mercenaries.

โ€œGalambos. If it werenโ€™t for you in this gargoyle hunt, we couldnโ€™t have caught it. I acknowledge your contribution, and you will be the first to pick whatever you want. Choose anything you like.โ€

โ€œTha. . . Thank you!โ€

Galambos was stunned. Other mercenaries already knew Johan was generous, but Galambos had less experience with it.

Galambos looked around cautiously.

The mansion was filled with all sorts of lavish valuables. Silver candlesticks and goblets, a golden cabinet made from cut marble, rare glass pieces, and more.

He worried that if he really chose something, his wrist might be cut off.

โ€œIf you canโ€™t choose, Iโ€™ll pick a few for you.โ€

Johan, noticing Galambosโ€™s hesitation, picked up a few bracelets and threw them into his arms. Dazzled by the shining gold, Galambos bowed his head in gratitude.

โ€œThank you! Thank you!โ€

โ€œHurry up and choose. The other mercenaries are waiting because of you.โ€

Galambos looked back. The other mercenaries were glaring with fiery eyes, a silent signal for him to hurry up and make way.
