" Mother?"
" What are you up to these days? Do you know how worried we become everytime we hear your name?" said Laura sternly. Samuel knew immediately someone must have passed the news to her.
It was not like he didn't expect it; sooner or later, someone was bound to open their mouth to his family. It's not like he planned to go to war when he landed in Paris; he was a victim of circumstances!
" I am sorry, I don't mean to do anything. Things seemed to progressive so I need to take action."
" Action? Are you a soldier? When are you going to learn to delegate these dangerous task to those who are fit to do it? I heard you went in alone to... I don't even what to say it. Is it true?" Samuel could hear her voice crack in the middle.
For the longest time, he had known his mother as the strongest woman on the planet. She was charming and elegant but held to her virtues despite facing disaster throughout her youth. It might be the influence of his grandmother, but she was a different person who maintained balance with how she did things.
Hearing her tear up over the phone broke his heart like he never imagined it was possible. He knew he was doing the right thing but felt torn that he couldn't come clean with her. He feared what others would think about him when they learned his true background.
" You already know everything, will it change anything if you learn about the details? I emphasized again and again that I would never put myself in harms way without weighing the risks."
" I don't understand why you have to do it in the first place? I didn't say anything when you got arrested but this? Fighting people with guns? I can't have anything happening to you again. You remember the orphanage incident right?"
Samuel couldn't say anything to refute her. He had to take the bullet that time, knowing he would die, but Hannah's life was on the line. He had to do something. Fortunately, Apollo was there to fix him, or he would only die slowly.
" Your silence tell me everything. I don't care what you do but just promise me you would never do anything dangerous anymore. Please." She pleaded, but Samuel couldn't lie to her.
" I can't, you already know what my dreams are. There are bound to some trouble in the future, I can't turn away even if you want me to. I am sorry mother."
" Hah" She sighed," I told you he wouldn't listen." Samuel heard another voice over the phone. He recognized it immediately as his father's voice. What were they planning?
" Father? Does everyone know already? It was only a minor incursion-"
" Don't you dare lie to me boy! Do you think I don't have connections in Paris? Me, your grandfather and your uncle went through with it already. There were disturbing images that we couldn't even imagine and you being in the center of it? Have you lost faith in us already?" Robert was furious.
He had always loved Samuel as his son. Samuel was like a miracle for them since he came into their life. Laura, who was depressed, cheered up due to his voice. Another miracle happened when she became pregnant all of a sudden.
They had traveled the globe for a cure, but it came in the form of an orphan boy who brought a string of good fortune for them and their family. They knew since the start that he was special, and from the moment he wrote his book and published it as a best seller at the mere age of ten, they knew he was destined for something great.
But they never stopped supporting him, even when he began making much money. They would constantly remind him to take a break and rely on his family, but time and time again, Samuel seemed to drift further apart from them.
Now that he was headed toward a dangerous path, how could they not try to stop him? If it were a simple enemy, they would have already wiped them off without him knowing, but they had some inkling that the ghost from the past had begun to rise. It would be troubling if they suddenly lost him; it was their last chance to make him aware of what he was about to do.
" That's not the case. Even if I asked for help this time, it was too late when I found out. A little girl's life was at stake; what was I supposed to do? Let her die when I know I can help? that's not how you raised me. There are some things that one can't escape even if they wanted to." Samuel said in a soft tone, trying to make them understand.
What's done was done. Samuel knew the minute he learned about the six crowns, it would be a battle of life and death. Their identity was important for an organization so mysterious that even his family didn't know about it. Now that he was on their trail, he would find them sooner or later. He just needs to be better prepared for it!
" Alright, we understand. Take a leave and come back home, it's almost christmas time. Grey had been clamoring asking for you past couple of days." Laura said.
" But I am in middle of a tour-"
" You don't have to hide it. Your tour had nothing to do with it right? Bring them over, we can better protect them here." Robert added.
" Eh? I don't know what you are talking about?" Samuel vehemently denied it. He remembered what happened with Liliana and Rosaline, and it was the same situation, like a deja vu!
" You don't have to act shy. You are already an adult, we will no longer judge your actions but as a man you have to take responsibility-"
" Honey! Don't teach him anything strange! I was happy when I learned about Adele but I freaked out by discovering our son's escapades in US. I feel like there no end-"
" Alright, alright. I will ask them but don't get your hopes up! I will hang up now-"
" I will send a car to the airport tomorrow," Laura said and hung up. They never discussed when he would return; Christmas was still a month away! It looked like he had to pack up his bags and return home.
