I kicked in the door, sending it flying off of its hinges.
As expected, the room was the same as all the other harvesting rooms. The center operating table held a bound Kamida; he looked at me with the most pleading expression I'd ever seen.
Hovering over him was another harvester, but something was different about her.
It wasn't her unkemptness or depraved expression; those were pretty standard here for some reason. Instead, unlike the others, she had a particular aura of bloodlust. It was the same as what I'd felt with Vlad; she naturally emitted fear.
'Must be a vampire,' I considered to myself. Of course, I had no idea if that was true or not, but, whatever she was, I wouldn't underestimate her.
She faced me, her expression of surprise instantly diffusing into pure hatred. "How dare you…." She trembled and directed her knife at me. "How dare you interrupt my lovey-dovey time with my meal!" Her lips constricted, revealing four razor-edged fangs.
Aside from the irregular teeth that served as proof of her vampirism, I was more confused by what she'd said.
What? "Lovey-dovey time"? I questioned.
I glanced at Kamida; he'd been hysterically shaking his head "no" at her declaration.
Far from lovey-dovey, Kamida was soaked in a cold sweat across his body, and his eyes twitched with dread. Even his arms trembled uncontrollably, probably at the fact that he'd been millimeters away from death.
I was thoroughly vexed by what she had said, but oh well. I brandished the paring knife in one hand and the blunted one in the other. My right with the blade pointing forward and my left with the blade backward.
It was a stance that allowed me to land repeated blows quickly and defend myself with ease from incoming blows.
"I hate to break it to you, "I lowered myself slightly, "but he's coming with me." I braced my aching body and exhausted mind for a dance of death.
She laughed maniacally. Her haughty giggle filled the room and left it with an air of contempt for not just me but all of humanity. "Interesting..." She said, spinning her knife with a flourish. "Cattle like you should know your place."
I took a breath, a ritual that would seal my fear and fatigue.
Though I didn't know the combat capabilities of alleged vampires, you could be sure I knew my own. I've killed many monsters in my life, all having roamed within human skin like her.
The cruel, the sadistic, the unforgivable. I've ended the stories of many that fit those descriptions. Even if she were a demon, it wouldn't be any different for me. I'd take her life all the same.
"Cattle can be monsters, too, " I smirked, pointing my paring knife at her tauntingly.
She grinned, and murder shined in her widened eyes. At that moment, time appeared still when she vanished before me, leaving only an afterimage to fill the space she'd left.
Directly after, I saw her from the corner of my right eye as she practically teleported above and behind me. While in the air, she sliced her knife downward like a guillotine, aiming for the base of my neck.
I had barely enough time for a response, but, thanks to my experience dodging bullets for half a decade, I made it by buckling my knees. Even with my swift evasion, the blade had still been speedy enough to split the hairs on my head.
With a strike like that, I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd lopped my head clean off if she landed a direct hit.
She followed up by jabbing her knife toward my right eye. The blade's illuminated tip became larger and larger with each passing millisecond.
Again, I countered by the skin of my teeth by side-stepping away and parrying her blow with my paring knife. Gripping the hilt tightly, I slashed my blade upwards to meet hers.
Sparks slid off the blades as they scraped against one another. The friction had been so intense that it created an ear-grating screech. Following up, I poured all my strength into throwing her backward away from me.
Seeing that her attack had failed, she growled in frustration. Then she gritted her teeth and threw forward a third swipe of her blade. I couldn't keep consecutively dodging forever, so I rolled toward the space she'd been in near Kamida to recover.
After missing yet again, she exhaled loudly in irritation.
"Hmmm, "she hummed, tapping her knife on her shoulder, and turned to me, "that's pretty impressive. I never thought a human could keep up with my blade like that…." She sighed. "Here, I was hoping you'd die quickly so I could get back to my quality time with my dear over there." She gestured toward Kamida.
pαпdα-ňᴏνêι·сóМ Upon seeing her lustful but deadly smile, he visibly shivered at her. His entire body quivered with fear uncontrollably.
"I'd say that I'm sorry to disappoint you, but that'd be a lie." I chuckled while panting. "Your speed is pretty impressive, too; I can't wait to see what you dish out next," is what I said, but I was already exhausted from our first exchange.
The blood loss had taken a critical toll on my body, so if I didn't end this quickly, my chances of surviving were practically zero. My body was beginning to shut down, and my life had literally been draining from my body.
Subtly, I checked my surroundings for an advantage...anything I could use to limit her movements. That's when I spotted several stacked and square metallic trays on the workbench next to me.
I smirked. 'Heh, maybe I'm the lucky one, Kamida.'
"That's some nerve…." She scoffed. "To take your eyes off who you're fighting… I'll slice you up and eat your heart!" She disappeared again; however, I was ready this time.
Before she reappeared, I dove to the workbench, dropped my blunted knife, and swiped the stacked trays with my free hand. Then, grasping the cold steel, I scattered them around me to create what looked to be a small field of landmines around me.
