They followed Sam to the dining room where a long table had been set up for them. Sunye sat next to Jonghyun while Hyeri sat on his other side. Myung, Orea and SD took their seats on the opposite side with SD facing Sunye.
Sam stood behind SD, watching everyone with intense scrutiny. Orea was a little nervous. The hawk-like right hand man of the PM was too vigilant. It would be nearly impossible to plant any bugs in that mansion and the only way to get hold of their security system is by breaking into it from inside the mansion itself.
SD seemed to have understood her predicament. The confiscation of the cell phones was a major problem. How were they going to break into the system?
"Umm…"
Orea turned towards Myung. "I have to tell my brother that I'm at your place otherwise he'll worry," she whispered to him. "Can I have your phone?"
"You can call him after dinner," Myung replied curtly. Orea gave him a nervous smile and looked down at her plate. What the hell am I gonna do? She thought in bitterness.
She did not dare to look at Sam who was uptight and still observing all of them. Even glancing at SD could be a suicidal move.
SD, on the other hand, was observing the prevalent tension between Hyeri, Myung and Jonghyun. The latter was making small talk with Sunye which was sending Hyeri over the edge. She clutched her napkin in anger, as if she was witnessing a sickening scene.
"Have you made progress in Shin Hyun's case?" Jonghyun was asking.
"Umm...yes," Sunye replied. "I still have a little bit of work left on it but I'll be done on time for the trial."
Sunye did not elaborate on it and kept her eyes on SD who was pretending to glance at the surroundings. Jonghyun followed her gaze and pursed his lips. Why was she so distracted that night?
"Last week," he began. "I went to your house to give you the court notice about Shin Hyun's case. But you weren't there."
Sunye, who was still focused on SD, merle asked, "Huh? Did you say something?"
"I asked that last week, I had gone to your house to hand over the court papers," Jonghyun said slowly. "But you weren't home."
"I was out with friends," Sunye lied. Jonghyun raised his eyebrows. Hyeri was also listening in on the conversation. Jonghyun went to her house?
"All night?" he asked. Sunye was shocked and so was Hyeri.
"You waited all night outside her house?" Hyeri asked. "Why?"
"I wanted to work on the case as soon as possible and hence, thought of waiting for Ms. Han," Jonghyun said in a cool tone.
"So you'd wait for an employee all night?" Hyeri accused. "Aren't you making your preference for Sunye a little too obvious?"
ραпdα nᴏνɐ| сom "Why were you waiting for me all night?" Sunye asked quietly. "Those papers could have been delivered to me at the office on the next day."
"I wanted to talk to you," Jonghyun confessed. "Something important but-"
"I think official work should be limited to the workplace only," Sunye said. "And not outside of it. As the CEO of a law firm, you shouldn't be staking out in front of an employee's house!"
Jonghyun was abashed but SD came to his rescue. "I apologize for the miscommunication, Ms. Han," he said. "The CEO had asked me to let you know but it slipped my mind. I should have informed you beforehand."
Sunye raised an eyebrow. Why was he lying? They were together that night! If Jonghyun had caught them, then it would have been too complicated to explain why they were together-
Then it hit her. SD must have seen Jonghyun waiting outside her apartment! That explains why he took me to his place, she thought.
She glared at Jonghyun for his thoughtless actions. The case was important but waiting outside her house all night was an insane thing to do!
I've had enough of one insane guy in my life and I don't need another one! She thought angrily, glaring at SD from the corner of her eye.
"I'm sorry," Jonghyun apologized. "It was a careless thing to do."
"If I'm not wrong, you're trying to get too close to Ms. Han for her liking," Myung commented as he sipped water from a glass. "Then again, your secretary should have informed Ms. Han about it. Seems to me that it's his fault."
He threw a dirty gaze at SD, who was looking down, simply listening. Orea was feeling way too uncomfortable at the scene. She had only seen such snarky comments on dramas and it seemed like real life was no different. Fidgeting nervously in her seat, she felt like the third wheel.
"Then again, maybe Ms. Han has a quality which attracts men to her," Hyeri remarked with a smile. The double meaning in her words was loud and clear. Sunye did not lose her temper, keeping her cool while SD wanted to snort at the cheap vamp.
Sam stood at a corner, ignoring the family drama. He kept on glancing at his watch, waiting for his master to arrive.
"I am truly sorry for the misunderstanding," SD said. "This is my fault."
"Haein, you don't have to apologize!" Jonghyun exclaimed, playing along with the lie. "It was an honest mistake. Don't worry. It was all a miscommunication. Right, Ms. Han?"
Sunye gave SD an angry look. She was not angry at his intrusion but rather irritated by the fact that he was covering up for Jonghyun. Why wasn't he letting her admit that she was with him? Why make such elaborate lies?
"It's okay," she finally said.
Just then, a group of servants entered the dining room with trays full of beverages. They walked around, serving the fruit juice to the guests. Sam received a text on his phone.
"The Prime Minister has arrived," he declared. "He's on his way to the dining room at this very moment."
Instantly, everyone stood up to show respect. They heard several footsteps coming their way until they stopped right outside. Then only one pair of footsteps echoed through the mansion.
Standing at the entrance was a thin, grey haired man who donned a polite smile.
"Welcome," he said. "I am Lee Weijong, Prime Minister of Country K."
