Zayne moved fast and deadly, his sword leaving Clort no chance. He had no trouble suppressing him since Clort simply couldn't use his spells.
Mages always lost to knights in close combat as they were weaker physically and definitely slower. Also, all Clort could do was defend himself and somehow block attacks, but even the barriers he created could not help him.
Gron, too, was involved in this battle, but for the last few seconds, he just stood there with his eyes wide open.
'Amazing... I thought that tragedy might happen today, but this young man... he changed everything. Where did he even come from?" Gron internally muttered, watching Zayne's masterful movements.
Each swing of his sword was precise, and soon enough, Clort's body was covered in a multitude of cuts from which blood flowed.
"Unbelievable..." Sara muttered with a slight shiver throughout her body, "I can't know for sure, but somehow I feel like if I fought against him I would have lost already..."
"Sure." Marcus nodded, "That's exactly what would have happened."
"Hey... What about me? I think my sword skills are also at a high level!" Fosca asked with a curious expression.
"Hah, you think too much of yourself. He would have cut you apart in the first few seconds and that would have been the end of your fight. It's not just about fencing, it's about overall speed, reaction, and strength." Marcus said sternly, causing Fosca's face to darken.
Edvin, Karin, and Fride were as pleased with what they saw as Toruf was. They had their own reasons to be worried about Zayne, but they were on the same side and that was the main thing.
"Not bad, not bad at all. I even feel a little proud that I accepted Chaos's offer and sent Zayne here." Karin muttered with a sly smile on her face.
Edvin raised an eyebrow, "Hmm... I was wondering how he got here. You're in on it, aren't you?"
Karin shrugged, "Not exactly. You know very well that once Chaos has decided to offer someone a Chaos Trial, there is no stopping the process. However, I helped hide the Chaos Seed that opened the portal and moved Zayne here to the Dark Lands."
Edvin nodded.
"What...? You've been communicating with Chaos...?" Kota was surprised.
"Something like that." Karin nodded, "It wasn't directly and through messages using phrases composed of flames. After all, no one knows if Chaos or Fate has a physical shell, but some sort of consciousness they definitely possess."
Kota nodded slowly with a dazed expression, then she abruptly turned to Karin and asked, "In that case... How did you do it?"
Karin giggled, "It was easy. I needed Oracle's heart to do it."
Kota's face turned pale not even because of what Karin had said, but because of the way in which she was talking about it.
Killing Oracle was one of the most serious crimes in the Empire. Anyone who did so would be haunted by Order for the rest of their life and only a madman would go for it.
"You seem surprised." Edvin calmly said while looking at Kota, "Well, there's nothing unexpected about it. But you have to realize that such a thing is only possible if you're strong enough. When you have power, you can do whatever you want and act according to your justice."
Kota looked lost and puzzled, she was the weakest here and yet young at the same time. In some ways, she was like Zayne, but in fact, even he had already traveled much further in his mind, accepting the rules of this world for what they were and building his own path.
"Doesn't that mean... That any person with powers can do what they want? I mean... anyone, doctor or criminal, villain or hero... there's no difference." Kota muttered with sadness in her eyes.
Edvin nodded, "Yeah, but you don't have to worry about that since it's been going on for hundreds of years, since the beginning of our world, since the very first second. If you have ideals, you have to fight for them. Ideals can only be bad or good because of the opinion of others, only other people give anything meaning and a certain position."
Kota didn't answer anything, she just pondered about it.
Karin glanced at Kota with a slight smile on her face and a dangerous glint in her eyes.
However, she immediately felt the powerful pressure that came from Edvin, so she had to abandon her idea and just go back to watching the fight.
Crackle. Crackle. Crackle.
Zayne continued to rain down a hail of blows on Clort, with a cold stare. He wasn't trying to end their fight quickly or slow it down to a cautious pace. He was doing exactly what he needed to do, nothing more.
'Hmm... How strange I feel... It's like something is changing in me right now... Is it a desire for power? Well, perhaps, but there's no way for me to find out right now. I have to finish my mission first.'' Zayne pondered for a moment before turning around abruptly.
A crack.
Zayne's foot plunged into Clort's stomach, causing his eyes to go wide with waves of pain throughout his body.
Clort couldn't keep his balance, so the impact threw him aside. His back broke several branches and bushes before reaching the ground.
Zayne took a deep breath and glanced at Gron. They nodded to each other and rushed forward at the same time, preparing to make a joint attack.
Clort was already seriously wounded, so all they needed was a few last attacks to finish this little story.
'I'm not familiar with these Lizards, but I can understand what it's like to take care of someone who's sick. I can't let Clort's selfish desires, ruin the lives of those who don't deserve it at all. Now, this will be my justice, such as it is.'' Zayne inwardly uttered, heading towards Clort.
Crackle. Crackle. Crack.
Gron's massive spear became covered in electrical discharges, and at the same time, Zayne's sword erupted in blue flames, coating the ground beside him with a thin layer of ice.
"Now!" Zayne exclaimed, swinging his sword and launching a flaming cross straight at Clort, who was still lying on the ground bleeding.
Gron nodded, and blue lightning flew out from his spear, quickly approaching their opponent.
It seemed like this should have been the end for Clort, but there was no fear in his eyes. The only thing he felt then was hatred, it was a bright flame burned inside him, and was ready to burst out at any moment.
"Bastards... You made a major mistake...!" Clort angrily exclaimed as the sphere of his staff shone brightly and exploded releasing outward ripples.
A barrier appeared around him that easily absorbed Zayne and Gron's attacks, and then Clort's body was engulfed in purple flames.
Zayne frowned as he looked at Gron.
"Hey, attack again! We mustn't let him do what he's about to do!" Zayne exclaimed and immediately launched another flame cross.
Gron nodded and did as he said, but their attacks couldn't get through the flames. Ice didn't have time to appear as the flames quickly destroyed it, into small particles. The lightning simply turned into nothing, just like the electrical discharges.
Gradually, the flames grew larger as well as the silhouette behind it.
"Damn... I expected it wouldn't be this easy, but does this look like how a mage should fight?" Zayne muttered with a slight frown.
"Get ready!" Gron exclaimed, "This is one of the forbidden spells! He won't even be able to walk for a month afterward, but for a short period, he will gain great power! We must stand our ground or he will destroy us all!"
Zayne nodded with a serious expression. He could feel how powerful Clort's aura was now as if he had been hiding it all this time.
Soon, the flames began to slowly dissipate revealing Clort's renewed appearance. He had grown considerably taller, over five meters tall, and now looked like a humanoid monster.
His skin turned purple, his eyes red, and two long black horns appeared on his head. His mantle strangely adjusted to his body and became an unusual light armor with glowing runes.
In Clort's hand was his staff, but it became much larger, and gained a sharp tip like a spear.
"You..." Clort said, pointing at Zayne, "You'll regret what you did... You shouldn't have come here... This place will be your grave!"
At the same moment, a devastating ray of energy flew out from Clort's finger, quickly reaching Zayne.
Zayne's pupils narrowed as scarlet wings opened behind him, and he quickly found himself a few meters away from where he was just standing.
Booooooooooooooooooom.
A massive burst of purple flame covered part of the forest, and streams rushed out in all directions. Zayne barely managed to move away to a safe distance, since the radius of the explosion was huge.
A deep crater was left at the point of impact with circles of slowly fading purple flames.
