Kneeling, Velvet cleared a tombstone from the snow, then looked at the name engraved on it.
'ADRIAN RUSSEL'S LAST PLACE TO REST.'
"I didn't expect our meeting with him four months ago to be our last." Candice, standing next to Velvet, muttered. "And he didn't tell us that he was seriously ill that time."
Velvet wiped away her tears, then looked at her friend. "Go on. You want to blame me for being too busy to come to his grave?"
The mage averted his gaze. "Even I wouldn't be that cruel, Vel. And after all, you do what you do to help people."
"No, I am indeed a bad friend." The prophet got up while adjusting her scarf. "I wasn't by his side when he needed it."
The two women fell silent, continuing to stare at the tombstone. All that was heard was the sound of the winter wind moving the branches of the trees.
"You love him, right?" Candice asked through trembling lips.
The prophet closed her eyes. She only answered moments later. "Yes, very."
"Me too." A faint smile formed on Candice's face. "Every night, I always dream of him."
Velvet smiled at her best friend. "I don't think we'll ever find a man like him again. He's a wonderful soul."
Candice was about to respond, but her words were blocked by a beast's growl from a distance.
The two friends looked at the cemetery gate and found a figure similar to a giant dog with black fur but standing on two legs.
"Ah, looks like there are some werewolves still around." Velvet narrowed her eyes.
"Be careful, Vel." Candice readied her magic staff. "It's not a full moon night. Hell, it's not even night yet, but he's already able to transform. That means he's really desperate. He can activate his wolf form at will."
"Aah, after days of me sniffing your scent, I finally found you, Velvet Byrne!" The nearly nine-foot-tall creature growled again. "How dare you kill all my clan members!"
"Hey, ugly dog!" Candice mocked that creature. "You hid when Velvet destroyed your group, right!? You should have died with them! You coward!"
"What did you say!?"
Velvet tugged at the back of Candice's robe and whispered. "This is bad, Candice. Really, really bad."
"What!?"
"I didn't bring my weapon."
The mage's eyes widened. "Why are you being such an idiot!? I did ask you not to wear armor, but that doesn't mean you go around without a weapon."
"My armor and weapon are one unit!" Velvet snapped back. "Of course, I'm thinking of not using all of them!"
The wolf beast let out a long howl. "Why are you two bickering like that!? Fight me!"
With both hands and feet, he ran to those women. Candice recited the spells rapidly while raising her staff, triggering light of various colors to envelop the prophet's body alternately.
With his partner's buff magic, Velvet's speed, power, vision, and stamina increased many times. She was able to dodge while carrying Candice.
The werewolf crashed into the gravestones and halted his run. That creature looks around with a ferocious face, looking for its target.
He didn't realize that Velvet had already jumped behind him with a tombstone in her hand.
*Thud!*
The impact of the tombstones made the monster stagger, and Candice didn't waste a chance. The mage tapped her staff against the ground hard, sending a large chunk of ground flying and smashing into the enemy.
However, that creature remains standing, though still staggering.
So, Velvet ran fast, sliding on the cold ground, and tackled the werewolf's leg. Finally, the monster fell down.
Seeing that the enemy seemed to be having difficulty getting up, Velvet made his hands glow red, like burning charcoal. She climbed onto the creature's back and pressed her hot hands into its eyes.
Howls of pain echoed through the cemetery. Velvet jumped back when the enemy's claws were about to hit her. Yes, it doesn't take long to disable the eyes of that werewolf.
"Now, how do we finish him off?" Candice approaches the prophet while the creature moves its arms wildly, destroying the graves.
Velvet continued to watch the werewolf from a distance. "Let me think."
"If you think too long, he will destroy this place even more." The mage was about to use his ground magic again, but Velvet held her hand.
"No, he'll know where we are." Velvet explained. "We're lucky he didn't use his smell to pinpoint our location. He's freaking out."
"So, what should we do then?"
Velvet was silent again for a moment. "Make me a sword with your magic. Make it really dense."
"Huh?" Candice frowned. "I'm not sure I can make it sharp…. And soil takes a very long time to conduct heat."
"I didn't expect an answer like that from someone who studied magic and energy for years." Velvet chuckled. "We can still burn soil, right?"
Candice's eyes widened. "But that requires extremely intense heat!"
"Just do it."
Sighing, Candice stomps her staff to the ground again. Long-shaped chunks of soil came out from below, and it condensed into a sword with a thin blade.
A rapier.
Velvet took that makeshift sword, then held it tightly. She closed her eyes. And before long, embers from her hands flowed into the sword.
Feeling the intense heat, Candice hastily backed away, staring at the earthen sword glowing red more and more. "Holy shit."
The prophet's sleeve caught fire and disappeared in an instant, creating thick smoke and flying ashes.
"Why did you kill us!!!" The werewolf cried, finally giving up and kneeling on the ground. "We are just hiding and minding our business. We have no intention of killing humans."
"But, in reality, many of you kill humans." The prophet ran towards the creature.
"Those are the young werewolves!" The werewolf turned to where Velvet was coming, then stood up, ready to face the prophet. "They haven't been able to control their emotions when they turn into wolves on a full moon night….
Before the werewolf could finish speaking, Velvet jumped up and stabbed the rapier into his chin, piercing it up to the top of his head
The monster's head emitted a lot of smoke. And when Velvet jumped back, he dropped to his knees with his arms hanging down, instead of falling.
Velvet looked at the black ball with rippled edges down the midsection of his enemy. It is the essence of a demon and can only be seen by her.
The ripples in the ball slowed rapidly and then stopped. After that, that thing disappeared without a trace, indicating that the werewolf was dead.
