148 A Lump in His Heart

Blake didn’t know what had caused him to feel like there was a pebble – a lump – something that was stuck in his chest.

He had a general guess that was most likely to be true. That the feeling that he was currently feeling was because of Vera.

It wasn’t the feeling of betrayal for telling him and Robus to go on their own way and leaving them nor did he feel that Vera had been cruel to him for doing this to him.

What Vera had told him had made total sense and Blake was able to understand it fairly quickly after he got rid of the initial shock of seeing Vera really did disappear into the sky and leaving him and Robus behind.

He knew what Vera had told him that he and Robus needed the experience to grow stronger was true.

From his exchange with the humanoid demons, Blake knew that albeit his fighting skills were probably not underdeveloped because all he and Robus did back on the island was fight and kill enemies, his other experiences were still lacking.

And just from living alone with Robus for several days, Blake had already come up with new rune formations that he would never have made or even thought about if he had stayed on the island.

His skills in being a runemaster had increased as he understood more about the types of spells, elements, and runes that he needed to use to achieve his goal the best he could.

And that was only from living on his own in a completely foreign land for several days.

.....

Just thinking about that fact clearly, Blake knew that there would only be so much more knowledge and experience to learn for himself in his journey to reaching level 15.

But he couldn’t help but wanting to reach level 15 and evolve as fast as he could so that he would be able to meet Vera again.

He didn’t know why, but just the thought of not having a home, a place, or someone that he could come back to gave him a sense of trepidation that he had never felt before.

He wasn’t really alone because he had Robus by his side and it had greatly helped himself calm down and think straighter when the initial shock of Vera’s decision hit him.

However, Vera was still the one that literally saved him, took him in, and gave him the chance to survive in the world of the demons.

Although his body had somehow changed to a demon’s and he even got a very high talent for being a demon mage and a master of the demonic runes, Blake understood that if not for her, his journey wouldn’t be as smooth sailing as it had been so far.

Vera was the one who gave him his strength to be able to fight against the demons by teaching him all kinds of things that he would not be able to know and understand on his own.

But more importantly, Vera had given him a place, and someone to call home.

His experience might have not been much with her if it was looked at by only how much time he had spent with her.

But in those short months when they were living together, Blake felt happy and comfortable with the seemingly mundane and repetitive activities that he, Vera, and Robus did on an everyday basis.

Hunting outside with Robus, coming back to cook for Vera and then eating together with her, learning more about runes and spells with Vera, sleeping, then going back hunting with Robus.

It might have seemed to be a repetitive and boring routine for a lot of people, but for Blake who had a very different lifestyle back when he was still on earth, he had much preferred the routine that he had when he had turned to a demon.

No one ever tried to bully him. There’s no one that would call him out and kick him when he showed his talent or capabilities, in fact, he even got appreciation when he did it.

Blake would have never thought of going back to the human world again if it not for the existence of Amy, someone who had been the reason he kept on going despite living in a cruel world that was not made for him.

As much irony there was saying that Earth was a cruel world compared to the demon realm where the residents literally killed each other and ate each other’s souls to get themselves stronger, Blake felt that Earth was much crueler than the world that he was currently living in.

Here, Blake was able to do all kinds of things that he would never be able to do on earth, and he felt much more alive here compared to there.

And when Vera had told him to live on his own, away from her, Blake just felt that something important inside had been separated from him

And that feeling was what had caused him to want to reach level 15 and evolve as soon as possible so that he would be able to get rid of that unpleasant feeling from latching onto his body.

Blake still hadn’t quite understood why he felt it, but he was certain that he surely didn’t want to have that feeling.

“How should I continue moving forward after this? There’s still 2 levels away after I level up, and with the current method, it would take a while for me to reach it...” Blake muttered out loud.

Blake already knew that the number of souls needed after each level-up would increase.

And searching for possibly more than 300 souls to reach level 15 would take a lot of time.

Especially with his current method that could only gather 10 to 15 souls after each hunt.

“How can I increase my hunting speed...” Blake thought to himself as his mind wandered off, trying to find the solution to his problem.

Suddenly, Blake’s thoughts were cut off as there was this very unpleasant feeling in his heart.

It wasn’t because of the thoughts that he had regarding Vera, the feelings that he currently felt were very real as he could even feel his mind going literally into a mess and his heart beating faster.

And when he finally focused on his body, Blake finally knew where the feeling had come from.

It had come from the connection that connected him with Robus.
