366 Examining

“Her Majesty is hurt?” Vincent asked Felice while pushing the door open for the doctor.

“I think so, Milord,” Felice replied while bowing her head low.

Vincent didn’t question the maids any further thinking that they had only stayed guard and hadn’t actually gone inside to check up on the Queen. After all, the idea itself sounded absurd – vampire maids cleaning the human Queen’s wounds.

“After you, Lord Vincent,” the doctor said while pinching the bridge of his nose. He was feeling somewhat nauseous after traveling in an uncomfortable position, that too at a very high speed.

Vincent took a deep breath in and ordered the maids before entering the chamber, “One of you should go and call Martha here. Ask Holly to wait on Tilla. And the rest of you should stick around in your posts for a while. You all might be of some assistance.”

Vincent then cautiously strode towards the Queen’s bedchamber. When he reached the door, he noticed that the Queen’s clothes had been changed, and there were no visible traces of blood on the Queen.

He turned around to look at Felice who was still standing by the door. And he asked, “You changed the Queen’s clothes?”

Felice turned to face the Lord and nodded. “Yes, Milord.” And before Vincent asked her, she took the chance to further clarify, “There wasn’t a single wound on her when we changed her. But when we were done, we suddenly smelt… blood. We didn’t dare to go back in and check her again.”

“Understood.” Vincent looked at the doctor who had, by now, spread his suitcase open on the bedside table.

.....

The doctor looked like he was in his early thirties. He was lean and tall, had short dark hair, and had dark circles and eye bags. He also looked somewhat shaken, probably because of the fact that Vincent had practically threatened him to come with him.

After the untimely demise of the last doctor who used to look after the Queen, the other handful of doctors of Silver Keep were afraid that they would also meet a similar ending if they had anything to do with the monarchs. And when Vincent met rejections one after another, he threatened the next two doctors he came across.

Vincent sighed and went inside the bedchamber. He could tell why the maids were standing outside the door because the smell of blood was a bit too strong.

He stood on the other side of the bed and asked the doctor, who was looking lost, “What are you waiting for? See what’s wrong with Her Majesty.”

The doctor fumbled through his suitcase as if he was looking for something.

Vincent was agitated by the inaction of the doctor and shouted, “What’s keeping you from examining Her Majesty? What do you want?”

“Umm… You said that Her Majesty was simply unconscious because of a shock. But that maid was saying that she was bleeding.” The doctor cleared his throat when his voice didn’t come out as loud and clear.

Then he muttered while awkwardly pointing at the Queen’s face, “I can’t see any wounds right now. So, I am going to need a female assistant before I start.”

Vincent sighed at the awkwardness that the doctor was showing and grumbled in a low voice, “She is on the way.”

After a few moments, Martha entered the bedchamber while huffing and puffing. She then immediately asked the Lord, “You called for me?”

“Yes.” Vincent pointed at the doctor and ordered Martha, “Assist the doctor in finding the Queen’s wound, and do whatever he needs you to do. I will wait outside.”

Vincent left the room in a flash.

The doctor finally heaved a deep sigh of relief. He was at great ease knowing that he wasn’t in the same room as a vampire. He looked at Martha and asked, “Where’s the bathroom?”

Martha pointed to her left and answered while still breathing heavily, “It’s over there.”

The doctor looked at the Queen and ordered Martha, “I will wash my hands and be back in a jiffy. Till then, why don’t you find her wound for me?”

“Yes, doctor.” Martha gave a nod.

After the doctor headed towards the bathroom, Martha quickly lifted the blanket away from the Queen. She leaned closer to the Queen’s body and carefully examined her.

At first, she checked the Queen’s neck and shoulder because she had heard from Tilla that Marcella was going to bite the Queen. When she didn’t find any puncture wound or even a single scratch, she looked somewhat baffled.

She frowned and thought to herself, ‘Tilla was saying how that monster was grabbing Her Majesty’s hair. Did she, by chance, pull the Queen’s scalp as well?’

Martha slowly turned the Queen’s body to the side so that she could check the back of the Queen’s head. When she didn’t find anything, she sighed and straightened her back, only to be stunned by the sight of a patch of blood on the Queen’s bottom, and a matching patch on the bedsheet.

“Oh, thank God!” Martha heaved a sigh of relief when she saw that. “I was tensed for no reason.”

Right then, she heard the doctor coming inside the bedchamber again. She hurriedly turned the Queen on her back again and covered the bottom half of the Queen with the blanket.

“What’s wrong?” the doctor asked softly when he saw Martha acting a little suspiciously.

Martha looked at the doctor and gave a nervous chuckle. And she replied while scratching her cheek, “Umm… It looks like the Queen is having her monthly cycle. She doesn’t have any wound, I checked.”

“Oh!” The doctor awkwardly turned his head to look at his suitcase and said, “I guess I will just have to check her pulse then.”

He quickly turned to face the Queen again and carefully took her wrist in his palm. He took out his pocket watch and checked for the Queen’s pulse.

After a minute, he lay the Queen’s hand down on the bed and said to Martha, “Her Majesty’s pulse is a little weak at the moment. But it is because of her unconscious state. Lord Vincent said that Her Majesty passed out after witnessing something very shocking.”

“Yes, she saw someone getting beheaded,” Martha quickly added as if it was a normal occurrence here in the castle.

The doctor widened his eyes and held his breath. He paused abruptly as if he went into shock after hearing that.

And he cursed himself in his head, ‘I should have left the clinic early!’
